From Ghana to Hollins: An Artemis Scholar’s Journey of Curiosity, Community, and Purpose Georgette Donkoh

Q&A with Georgette Donkoh ’29

I’m from Stafford, Virginia. I was born in Cape Coast, Ghana, and I lived there for seven years of my life, and then I immigrated here with my family. I originally didn’t know about Hollins, but I received a letter in the mail from Hollins asking me if I would like to apply. I researched it and realized it was so sweet. I went on a campus tour and realized that this was the school I wanted to attend.

The Artemis Scholar is a scholarship funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is a program to fund women in STEM.  it is a chance to pursue a degree in STEM without worrying about the financial aspect.

I’m most excited to be in epidemiology with Dr. Jalloh in the Spring. I’m excited about that class because it is the career I want to explore. I’m currently pursuing a double major in public health and environmental science. It is a career that I really want to pursue because I was intrigued by the way the epidemiologists handled the pandemic and the way they operated. And I love learning about different diseases.

They were the only school to send me a letter, and in the letter, it stated that if I applied, I would receive a certain amount of scholarship. None of the other schools did that for me. I knew it was the right place to call home when I went to the Sunflower Festival, and I got charged twice for attending, not knowing that Hollins students are not supposed to get charged. Dr. Dan went to the cashier who charged me and got my money back.

It’s been a wonderful experience so far. All of the Artemis scholars and the people within the program are amazing people. I was lucky enough to have a group of people that I connected with before school started. With the assistance of my mentor, I believe I will grow to be someone who will always value education and remain curious throughout my career.

Right now, I’m on the Hollins Activity Board as a member of the Traditions committee. As for what legacy I would like to leave behind, I would like to be remembered as a person who is always there to help and be of service when needed.
