Crunching Numbers, Asking Big Questions: Dami Agoro’s Equation for Success

Oluwadamilare “Dami” Agoro ’25
B.S. Mathematics, Data Science Concentration, Philosophy Minor
Hometown:  Lagos State, Nigeria

“Most everything can be quantified,” says Dami Agoro. “You can reason this crazy world with mathematical equations.” A lifelong math lover, Agoro arrived at Hollins planning to be a pre-vet major—until one math class reignited her passion. “I fell in love with it all over again,” she says, crediting Molly Lynch, assistant professor and mathematics chair, and Giancarlo Schrementi, assistant professor of computer science.

She added a philosophy minor after taking Ancient Philosophy with James Patrick Downey, associate professor and philosophy chair. “Philosophy birthed mathematics,” Agoro explains. “It taught me logical reasoning; math showed me how to quantify it.”

Agoro has received graduate school offers in computer science from Virginia Tech and Morgan State University, where she hopes to launch a career in data analytics—possibly in human resources. She gained hands-on experience during a 2025 J-term internship with Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. “It was my first real look at how a data analytics team functions—it was amazing.”

At Hollins, she was a quantitative learning tutor, helping students tackle math and economics. “You don’t have to know everything to be a tutor,” she says. “Teaching is part of it, but it’s also about supporting students and being there for them.”

Involved in Mae Jemison Science Club, Philosophy Club, and Hollie Collie service group, Agoro says her biggest growth came in confidence. “Before Hollins, I doubted my knowledge. Now I advocate for myself. It’s been an amazing journey.”

Favorite Class: “I loved Ancient Philosophy because it introduced me to logical thinking/reasoning and gave me the tools to understand my own ethics and how I interact with the world around me.”
