Internship with the annual journal Children’s Literature
Open to students in the M.A. and M.F.A. programs. This opportunity carries a $2,000 tuition stipend.

Dhonielle Clayton Scholarship
Honoring Dhonielle Clayton, M.A.’09 and COO of the organization We Need Diverse Books, this scholarship awards $1,500 to a new or returning student who is a person of color or of native/indigenous ancestry.
To apply: Submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and the Hollins Graduate Program Financial Assistance Application (PDF), along with a short description of your scholarly and/or creative work.
SCBWI Scholarship Competition
One SCBWI member will be awarded $1,000 towards tuition for our Graduate Programs in Children’s Literature and Illustration. Deadline to submit application for potential 2024/25 funding is March 15, 2024. Results will be announced in time for summer 2024 registration. To enter, writers will submit the first page of a manuscript or academic work (based on SCBWI’s “first page critique” guidelines). Illustrators will submit three of their illustrations no later than March 15, 2024. More information and application form (PDF.)

Margaret Wise Brown Scholarship
Honoring Margaret Wise Brown, Hollins College class of 1932, and author of beloved children’s books including Goodnight, Moon and The Runaway Bunny. $1,000, given to a student who shows promise in the writing of children’s picture books, or who is an alumna of Hollins.
Francelia Butler Scholarship
Honoring the late Francelia Butler, founder of the journal Children’s Literature, now edited at Hollins, and founding angel of our children’s literature graduate program. $1,000, given to a student with a demonstrated enthusiasm for the field of children’s literature and a focus on scholarly study.
Beatrix Potter Scholarships
Named for the famed creator and illustrator of Peter Rabbit. Two awards of $1,000 each, one given to a first-year student who shows exceptional promise in illustration, and one to a returning student whose growth in her art has been exceptional.
Tinker Mountain Scholarships
Named for the iconic mountain that overlooks the Hollins campus. Two awards of $1,000 each, one given to a first-year student showing exceptional promise in young adult or middle grade fiction, and one to a returning student whose growth in her literary craft has been exceptional.
Swannanoa Scholarship
Named for the building which is home to the Children’s Literature program and the Hollins English Department. $1,000, given to a student doing exceptional scholarship in any genre.
