Business and Economics Students Explore the World Bank

On Friday, May 2, a group of business and economics students took a day trip to the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, sponsored by the economics and business department. The visit offered an in-depth look at the history, mission, and global impact of the World Bank, providing students with valuable insights into international development and finance.

The day began with a session led by Li Lou, World Bank Engagement and Partnerships External Affairs Officer, who discussed the institution’s history, mission to reduce poverty, and its global impact through sustainable development. Lou highlighted the World Bank’s lending principles, strategies, and best practices in international finance.

Next, Eugene Rhuggenaath, Executive Director of EDS19 and World Bank Board Governor, explained how the Bank evaluates development projects, emphasizing sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience in long-term lending. Key factors include alignment with national development strategies, the potential for poverty reduction, adherence to environmental and social safeguards, institutional readiness, financial sustainability, and the ability to build local capacity while promoting global best practices.

Students engaged in a Q&A session, discussing real-world projects and the balance between immediate needs and long-term responsibility. This visit reinforced the importance of multilateral approaches to development and deepened students’ understanding of global economic policies.
