Here at Hollins, we want to commend high school students who have shown exceptional promise in the areas of English and science. Read about our awards below:

Creative Writing Book Award

Awarded to a junior in high school who is nominated by their school’s English department, recipients of this award have a demonstrated interest and talent in creative writing, as well as sustained excellence in academic performance. Award recipients receive a certificate of achievement, an invitation for a personalized campus visit with a travel reimbursement voucher valued up to $250, and a minimum $24,000 merit award to be applied to the student’s tuition at Hollins, should she choose to enroll. We also encourage award recipients to grow their skills in creative writing by attending our summer program Hollinsummer: Writers Who Are Going Places Start at Hollins. Please submit nominations by April 15, 2024.

Mary Beth Hatten Award for Science and Scholarship

Awarded to a junior in high school who is nominated by their school’s Science department, recipients of this award have demonstrated interest and talents in the field of science and in scientific research. Recipients receive a certificate, a minimum $24,000 merit award to be applied to their tuition should they choose to enroll at Hollins, as well a personalized campus visit with a travel reimbursement voucher valued up to $250. We also encourage recipients to engage in further scientific exploration through our summer program Hollinsummer: Experiment and Explore.

This award is named in honor of Mary Beth Hatten ’71, Ph.D., who works in the Laboratory of Development Neurobiology at the Rockefeller University. She received her doctorate from Princeton University and did post-doctoral research in neuroscience at Harvard Medical School before joining the Rockefeller University in 1992. She was the university’s first female full professor and the first female to lead a research laboratory there. She was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Please submit nominations by April 15, 2024.
