January Short Term

If you think winter is for hibernation, you'll change your mind when you take a close look at our January Short Term. J-Term provides you with the unique opportunity to test drive a career with an internship, take a travel/study course, or sign up for an engaging seminar (pass/fail, so you can safely explore outside your major).

Internships galore

Begun in 1968, the January Short Term was originally designed to give students a full-month of on-the-job experience and test career interests. Today, Hollins students intern everywhere from law offices to Capitol Hill, from their hometown newspaper to Fortune magazine, from a doctor's office to the Centers for Disease Control. Beginning Short Term 2011, Hollins launched competitive internship opportunities for first-year students. View some students talking about their experiences.

See the world

But there's more. Many students opt to spend the month in a travel/study course. This year students traveled to a variety of countries, including England, Scotland, and Wales; France, Costa Rica, Spain, and the Caribbean. Students can also be a part of a touring theatre production for children, or learn what it's like to be behind the scenes of an art museum.

Short Term seminars

First-year students take their choice from an array of seminars. This year's seminars included such offerings as "Explorations into Printmaking," "Full Disclosure Poetry," "Sports Leadership and Coaching," and "Appalachia: People, Place, and Plants."
