Academics > Internships > Short Term

If you think winter is for hibernation, you’ll change your mind when you take a close look at our January Short Term. J-Term provides you with the unique opportunity to test drive a career with an internship, take a travel/study course, or sign up for an engaging seminar (pass/fail, so you can safely explore outside your major).

Internships Galore
Begun in 1968, the January Short Term was originally designed to give students a full-month of on-the-job experience and test career interests. Today, Hollins students intern everywhere from law offices to Capitol Hill, from their hometown newspaper to Fortune magazine, from a doctor’s office to the Centers for Disease Control.

See the World
But there’s more. Many students opt to spend the month in a travel/study course. In January 2008, students traveled to a variety of countries, including Japan, Germany, London, Paris, and Turkey. Students also studied art at the New York Studio School in New York City, or through on-site activities and visits with women working in a range of leadership and social change fields in New York, students learned about the daily work, challenges, and rewards of doing social change work.
