Who donated the Andy Warhol?

Hollins one of three area colleges to receive artist’s works

Maria ShriverThe Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program has donated more than 28,500 of the artist’s photographs to educational institutions across the country, including Hollins, Washington & Lee University, and Roanoke College. The gift received by the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum includes many of Warhol’s original Polaroids, as well as silver gelatin prints documenting his life.
An exhibition of the donated works, In the Event of Andy Warhol, will travel from W&L to Roanoke to Hollins, where it will be on display from May 31 until September 15. The exhibition focuses on the artist’s contemporaries, inspirations, and original works, and it also showcases works by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns, among others.
Warhol is both famous and infamous for his work, which interweaves the worlds of fine art, pop culture, and consumerism. “Warhol turned the camera on all the nuances of his life,” said Wilson Museum Director Amy Moorefield. “He influenced generations of younger artists.”
