Hollins Joins #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship Program

#YouAreWelcomeHere

Hollins University is pledging to create scholarships for international students to study in the U.S. as part of the #YouAreWelcomeHere national scholarship program. Spearheaded by Temple University on the heels of a widespread social media campaign, the program features 57 colleges and universities from across the country, ranging from community colleges to large, public universities.

Hollins is proud to help launch the #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship, advancing our university’s commitment to international students and to campus-wide globalization,” said Ashley Browning, Hollins’ vice president for enrollment management. “The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship at Hollins recognizes promising international students with a vision for enhancing intercultural understanding.”

Hollins will select two first-year students to receive an annual, renewable scholarship of $15,000 beginning in the fall 2019 semester. This scholarship is open to all academic majors and fields of study and is applied to tuition costs.

To qualify, students must be first-year international applicants to Hollins. They are required to hold citizenship in a country outside the U.S. and not also possess U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.  And, they should demonstrate interest and personal initiative in activities involving intercultural learning and exchange.

Nationally, the campaign has earned endorsements from key international education organizations, including the Institute of International Education (IIE).

“The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship meets an essential challenge in the effort to support international and refugee students, foster intercultural understanding, and develop future leaders,” said Allan E. Goodman, president of the IIE. “Refugee students flee conflict zones and cross intercultural divides to continue their higher education. As a higher education community, it is our responsibility to support such great efforts and welcome refugees to safe-haven universities across the United States.”
