It\u2019s hard to tell whether our students and faculty bring this sense of service with them when they come to Hollins, or whether there\u2019s something here that inspires it. In truth, it\u2019s probably a combination. If there\u2019s a theme to this issue, it\u2019s about how faculty members and alumnae are turning inspiration into action in their quest to improve life for other people.<\/p>\n<p>Beth JoJack \u201998 contributes two articles along these lines. In \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=7834\">On the Front Lines of Addressing America\u2019s Opioid Crisis<\/a><\/u>,\u201d she profiles alumnae who are working with victims and families, writing about the epidemic, and changing laws.<\/p>\n<p>Switching gears, she writes about the benefits to young teens of learning outdoor survival skills\u2014how spending \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=7850\">Time in the Wild<\/a><\/u>\u201d not only enhances self-confidence but also promotes the development of leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by her daughter\u2019s experience in a rock \u2018n\u2019 roll camp in North Carolina, Professor of Gender and Women\u2019s Studies LeeRay Costa helped create GirlsRock!Roanoke. The exclamation point underscores the camp\u2019s success in helping young girls and teens find their voice and their power in music (\u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=7858\">This Is How We Roll<\/a><\/u>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Martha Park M.F.A. \u201915 profiles Gay Lloyd Pinder \u201968 (\u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=7844\">Families at the Helm<\/a><\/u>\u201d), who with two colleagues founded Children\u2019s Therapy Center, which pioneered a family-centered approach to helping children with neuro-developmental issues.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201c<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=7865\">Turning the Page on Early Literacy<\/a><\/u>,\u201d Jeff Hodges M.A.L.S. \u201911 writes about how three faculty members\u2014Anna Baynum (education), Tiffany Pempek (psychology), and Ruth Sanderson (children\u2019s literature)\u2014transformed an unpublished manuscript by Margaret Wise Brown \u201932 into an interactive tool for parents and caregivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean Holzinger M.A.L.S. \u201911<\/strong><br \/>\nGuest Editor<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You may also view the Winter 2018 issue in a <a href=\" http:\/\/issuu.com\/hollinsuniversity-magazine\/docs\/hollins_winter2018?e=28188009\/57862831\">flipbook version<\/a>. &gt;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In her opening essay, President Lawrence writes about the dedication at Hollins to making our society a better place for all.
