By 2007, the university had retired its debt. Hollins has operated under no debt and with a balanced operating budget for the last decade.<\/li>\n<li>In its list of College Financial Grades for 2016, <em>Forbes<\/em> issued Hollins an \u201cA\u201d rating.<\/li>\n<li>The Campaign for Women Who Are Going Places was the university\u2019s largest ever comprehensive fundraising campaign and the largest ever undertaken by a women\u2019s college in the South.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Goal: $125 million<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7405 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/campaign.jpg\" alt=\"Campaign\" width=\"200\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/campaign.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/campaign-90x75.jpg 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Raised: $161 million<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>In November, Hollins announced the largest single gift assurance in school history: $20 million from Elizabeth Hall McDonnell \u201962, and her husband, James S. McDonnell III, through the JSM Charitable Trust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cFor me fundraising is all about building relationships, with people who care or potentially could care about your institution and matching up their personal passion with an institutional need,\u201d Gray explained when asked why she\u2019s been so successful at raising money. \u201cWhen you ask, you\u2019re not asking for yourself. In June, Hollins hosts the weeklong Tinker Mountain Writers\u2019 Workshop and Women Working with Clay Symposium. Later in the summer, for six weeks, Hollins is a coed campus for graduate students. In July, high-school women attend Hollinsummer programs in theatre, riding, and writing. Gray has also worked with outside groups to hold camps on campus. These range from sports camps to a summer music institute run by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. \u201cThis is a beautiful facility and we should be using it twelve months,\u201d Gray said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4591\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave.png\" alt=\"divider\" width=\"645\" height=\"26\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave.png 645w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave-250x10.png 250w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave-640x26.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Diversity and Inclusivity<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>32 percent students of color in 2016 up from 11 percent students of color in 2000<\/li>\n<li>In January, Hollins announced that Idella Goodson Glenn had been hired to serve as Special Advisor on Inclusivity and Diversity. She will coordinate all inclusivity and diversity activities and programs at the university.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7411 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/diversity.jpg\" alt=\"Diversity and Inclusivity\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/diversity.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/diversity-250x140.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Hollins\u2019 student orientation has added a program devoted to cultural competency and inclusivity.<\/li>\n<li>In November 2015, Hollins administered a climate assessment survey to gather feedback regarding the university\u2019s diversity and inclusivity strengths, and the areas where further community building is needed. The results of the survey were the catalyst for a series of insight conversations where students shared perspectives and critical dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>President Gray formed the Hollins Heritage Committee\u2014a group of students, faculty, and staff who help the campus community develop a greater understanding of its history and seek ways to recognize and honor the mid-19th century slaves and others whose work ensured the institution\u2019s survival during its early years.<\/li>\n<li>Scholarships were established for the descendants of Oldfields, a nearby African American community that played an instrumental role in the institution\u2019s growth.<\/li>\n<li>Moody, Talmadge Recital Hall, and Turner saw improvements to be more handicap accessible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gray is pleased with the strides Hollins has made to become a more diverse and inclusive campus, but stressed: \u201cThat work is never done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4591\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave.png\" alt=\"divider\" width=\"645\" height=\"26\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave.png 645w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave-250x10.png 250w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/wave-640x26.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Historic Campus and Sustainability<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Much of the campus has been renovated including Swannanoa, Turner, Randolph, Bradley, the theatre, and the Hill Houses.
