Here she offers a poem written while sitting in the Beale\u00a0Memorial Garden when she was on campus for her 45th reunion.<\/p>\n<p><em>What calls me to this garden?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Is it the pealing of the carillon,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the rush of the creek, today swollen and fast?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Could it be the song of a cardinal in the dogwood,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> emblematic of this Virginia home,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> or of two blackbirds high on the chapel roof?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Or is it the weeping willow still here,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> the ancient yew, statuesque now in a limbed-up stance?<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Perhaps it\u2019s the muddy daylilies, flattened by last night\u2019s flooding,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> unbroken and aflame along the banks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Possibly, it\u2019s the encouragement of natives:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> clusters of tripart, river birches poised like sculpture,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> white blooms on sweetspire bushes that punctuate the green,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> or redbud trees that dangle heart-shaped leaves.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Like us, they endure both deluge and drought.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe it\u2019s the old paths beside the clock<\/em><br \/>\n<em> that lead to a new bridge<\/em><br \/>\n<em> and winding walks above the stream,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> benches tucked in dry stone alcoves<\/em><br \/>\n<em> offering rest after days spent reaching back,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> connecting then and now<\/em><br \/>\n<em> truths first glimpsed here:<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Eliot\u2019s\u00a0\u201cmoment in and out of time,\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hesse\u2019s secret of the river,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> \u201c&#8230;always the same and yet every moment new.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6941 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hudson-kathy.jpg\" alt=\"Kathy Hudson\" width=\"200\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hudson-kathy.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/hudson-kathy-169x250.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>For many years Hudson has written biweekly essays for the\u00a0<em>Baltimore\u00a0Messenger<\/em>\u00a0and feature articles for\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>Baltimore Style<\/em>\u00a0magazine, as well as\u00a0other regional publications.
