In 2015, writer\u00a0Kathy\u00a0\u201cHuddy\u201d\u00a0Hudson\u00a0\u201971<\/strong>\u00a0collaborated with photographer\u00a0Roger Foley on a book about an acclaimed garden in Ruxton, Maryland\u00a0\u2014\u00a0On\u00a0Walnut Hill: The Evolution of a Garden<\/em>.\u00a0In addition to writing about the 46-year\u00a0history of the garden belonging to A.C. and Penney Hubbard, Hudson wrote\u00a0seven prose proems. Here she offers a poem written while sitting in the Beale\u00a0Memorial Garden when she was on campus for her 45th reunion.<\/p>\n

What calls me to this garden?<\/em>
\n Is it the pealing of the carillon,<\/em>
\n the rush of the creek, today swollen and fast?<\/em>
\n Could it be the song of a cardinal in the dogwood,<\/em>
\n emblematic of this Virginia home,<\/em>
\n or of two blackbirds high on the chapel roof?<\/em><\/p>\n

Or is it the weeping willow still here,<\/em>
\n the ancient yew, statuesque now in a limbed-up stance?<\/em>
\n Perhaps it\u2019s the muddy daylilies, flattened by last night\u2019s flooding,<\/em>
\n unbroken and aflame along the banks.<\/em><\/p>\n

Possibly, it\u2019s the encouragement of natives:<\/em>
\n clusters of tripart, river birches poised like sculpture,<\/em>
\n white blooms on sweetspire bushes that punctuate the green,<\/em>
\n or redbud trees that dangle heart-shaped leaves.<\/em>
\n Like us, they endure both deluge and drought.<\/em><\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s the old paths beside the clock<\/em>
\n that lead to a new bridge<\/em>
\n and winding walks above the stream,<\/em>
\n benches tucked in dry stone alcoves<\/em>
\n offering rest after days spent reaching back,<\/em>
\n connecting then and now<\/em>
\n truths first glimpsed here:<\/em>
\n Eliot\u2019s\u00a0\u201cmoment in and out of time,\u201d<\/em>
\n Hesse\u2019s secret of the river,<\/em>
\n \u201c…always the same and yet every moment new.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\"KathyFor many years Hudson has written biweekly essays for the\u00a0Baltimore\u00a0Messenger<\/em>\u00a0and feature articles for\u00a0<\/strong>Baltimore Style<\/em>\u00a0magazine, as well as\u00a0other regional publications.
