But by any name, Hollins has reason to celebrate this year as we commemorate\u00a0<em>our\u00a0<\/em>175th\u00a0anniversary. We are presenting a yearlong series of programs and activities that honor\u00a0our rich history, and\u00a0we\u00a0invite all alumnae and friends to join us.<\/p>\n<p>Our festivities will kick off with a campus picnic on August 30, continue through\u00a0the academic year, and culminate with reunion on June 2-4, 2017. Highlights of the year\u00a0include the following outstanding speakers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Olympia Snowe,\u00a0U.S. Senator, October 6, 2016, 7:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Donna Brazile, political strategist and author, November 14, 2016, 7 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Gwen Ifill,\u00a0PBS\u00a0<em>NewsHour<\/em>\u00a0co-anchor and managing editor, March 4, 2017,\u00a03 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, I encourage you to visit our new 175th anniversary\u00a0webpage often\u00a0(<a href=\"\/175th-anniversary\/\">www.hollins.edu\/175<\/a>) for news, special events, and other information related to our\u00a0celebration. The webpage includes a list of 175 distinguished alumnae and their\u00a0accomplishments, along with 175 moments in Hollins\u2019\u00a0history. You can read some of\u00a0those highlights on the following pages.<\/p>\n<p>As I reflect on this milestone, I cannot help but be impressed with how Hollins\u00a0has flourished and remained strong, finding the will to overcome\u00a0difficult moments in\u00a0American history that affected our students and faculty. Through the\u00a0Great Depression,\u00a0two World Wars, significant societal change, and contemporary challenges, Hollins has\u00a0always found a way not only to endure, but to thrive. May it always be so.<\/p>\n<p>We trace our roots to a young mathematics professor who was committed to\u00a0offering young women the same rigorous education as that afforded to young men.\u00a0From our founding in 1842, Hollins has evolved to the small university we are today,\u00a0continuing to offer\u00a0a\u00a0rigorous liberal arts education to women in a nondenominational\u00a0setting, complemented by eight coed graduate programs. During the course\u00a0of our 175\u00a0years, the opportunities extended to Hollins students have prepared them well for an ever-changing world. More than ever, and especially during our 175th year, we are\u00a0reminded of our motto, Levavi Oculos.
