As Ericka Kelly says in this issue\u2019s article about the Horizon Program (<strong>\u201cLiving the Dream,\u201d <\/strong>by Jeff Hodges), \u201cYou couldn\u2019t have paid me when I was 17 to go to an all-girls\u2019 school, but I see the genius in it now. It just incubates strength and motivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether you see the genius in a single-sex learning environment at 17 or later in life, it\u2019s something real. It\u2019s the kind of thing that\u2019s hard to quantify or explain, but somehow this experience becomes a part of our students and sustains them long after they graduate.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, building confidence and character is the theme of this issue, which shows how Hollins women are making the most of their education while they\u2019re here\u2014and then using it as their foundation and inspiration in the years that follow.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elysse Stolpe \u201910 kicks things off with a persuasive essay, <strong>\u201cStanding Out as a Women\u2019s College Graduate,\u201d<\/strong> about how her experience at Hollins boosted her performance as a student at the highly competitive University of Virginia Law School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Six students invited to participate in a <strong>round-table discussion<\/strong> reveal the various ways they have grown\u2014sometimes, as Student Government Associate President Georden West \u201915 says, by thinking of conflict as an opportunity to learn more about yourself. \u201cHere we learn how to navigate difficult conversations, no matter where we are,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen that anywhere else.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of our students cultivate leadership skills at Hollins, through the Batten Leadership Institute or student government, or through less formal channels, such as the Hollins Outdoor Program. Morgan Blalock \u201916 writes about these opportunities in <strong>\u201cLearning to Lead\u2014One Hike, Rapid, and Cave at a Time.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <strong>\u201cAuthor to Author,\u201d<\/strong> you\u2019ll read a fascinating interview that author Lee Smith \u201967 conducted with Beth Macy M.A. \u201993, whose book <em>Factory Man<\/em> had a sensational debut last fall.<\/p>\n<p>We end with a remembrance of Professor of English Eric Trethewey, who died last September.
