The other three\u2014Art Poskocil (sociology), Eberle Smith (social work), and Juergen Fleck (economics)\u2014will be profiled in the summer 2013 issue. The article\u2019s headline\u2014\u201c<a title=\"Great Teachers Inspire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3762\">Great Teachers Inspire<\/a>\u201d\u2014sums up what these longtime professors have given to Hollins students over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>President Gray writes about the important contribution these professors have made to Hollins in her essay, \u201c<a title=\"Post-college success isn\u2019t all about the money\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3795\">Post-College Success Isn\u2019t All About the Money<\/a>.\u201d She makes a strong case for the enduring value of a liberal arts education.<\/p>\n<p>Hollins professors take the spotlight in another feature article, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3866\">How To<\/a>,\u201d in which we find out how to live better\u2014if we take the advice of Juergen Fleck (how to prepare for retirement), Jeanne Larsen (how to read and write poetry), Jill Weber (how to relate to an audience), Renee Godard (how to reduce your carbon footprint), and George Ledger (how to improve your memory).<\/p>\n<p>In \u201c<a title=\"Violence Revisited\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3857\">Violence Revisited<\/a>,\u201d Jeff Hodges M.A.L.S. \u201911 writes about how an incident that Louis D. Rubin, Jr. Writer-in-Residence Karen Osborn \u201979 witnessed many years ago inspired and informed her most recent novel, <em>Centerville<\/em>\u2014which, by the way, received this year\u2019s gold medal in the popular fiction category from the Independent Publisher Book Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Adams M.A. \u201993, M.A. \u201900, M.F.A. \u201910 writes about the slight\u2014but no less fascinating\u2014connection between <a title=\"Irene Langhorne Gibson: From Hollins Girl to Gibson Girl\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3783\">Hollins and Irene Langhorne Gibson<\/a>, who served as the model for artist Charles Dana Gibson\u2019s famous Gibson Girl illustrations of the late 19th century. Irene\u2019s famous sister, Nancy, a.k.a. Lady Astor, is profiled <a title=\"Lady Nancy Langhorne Astor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3934\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We celebrate the life and legacy of Nancy Thorp \u201960, who died when she was a young woman and whose family established the Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest in her memory.
