{"id":3804,"date":"2013-05-22T07:12:27","date_gmt":"2013-05-22T11:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/?p=3804"},"modified":"2013-05-22T07:16:12","modified_gmt":"2013-05-22T11:16:12","slug":"in-the-loop-spring-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/in-the-loop-spring-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Loop: Spring 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3805 alignnone\" alt=\"Decision Height\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/decision-height_685.jpg\" width=\"685\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/decision-height_685.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/decision-height_685-250x128.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/decision-height_685-648x332.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Several cast members from last fall\u2019s campus production of Decision Height: Sarah Peterson \u201916, Yasmeen LaTore \u201916, Madeleine Buttitta \u201915, and Emma Sperka \u201912.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Hollins Theatre, Playwright&#8217;s Lab rack up Kennedy Center honors<\/h3>\n<p>In March, the Hollins Theatre production of Natasha Trethewey\u2019s (M.A. \u201991) <em>Bellocq\u2019s Ophelia<\/em> was awarded four high national honors by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival: \u201cDistinguished Production of a New Work, \u201cDistinguished Performance and Production Ensemble,\u201d \u201cDistinguished Scenic Design,\u201d and \u201cDistinguished Choreography,\u201d the last by Lexi Martin Mondot \u201912.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>Meredith Levy \u201912<\/strong> (now a student in Hollins\u2019 M.F.A. program, Playwright\u2019s Lab) received the high honor of the National Partners of the American Theatre Playwriting Award and the regional David Shelton Award for her original script, <em>Decision Height<\/em>. <strong>Kevin Ferguson<\/strong>, also a student in the Playwright\u2019s Lab, was named a national finalist for the John Cauble Award for Outstanding Short Play for his work, <em>Losing Sight<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The awards were presented in April at the national Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Washington, D.C. Wilson Museum. Museum Director Amy Moorefield and Jang collaborated to bring the class to the museum in February. Students danced in all three galleries, devising movements appropriate to each exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3970\" alt=\"WWW\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/www.png\" width=\"72\" height=\"15\" \/>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mlwq5Z2BQ0s\" target=\"_blank\">www.youtube.com\/hollins<\/a> to see the dancers in action.<\/p>\n<h1>Milestones<\/h1>\n<p>This year we celebrate the anniversaries of four signature programs. The <strong>January Short Term<\/strong>, which offers students the option of internships, classes, or travel\/study excursions, began 45 years ago; the <strong>Jamaica Service Project<\/strong> marks 25 years of making a difference in the lives of the citizens of Lucea; and the <strong>Hollins Critic<\/strong> celebrates 50 years of publishing literary essays, book reviews, and poetry. The <strong>Nancy Thorp Poetry Contest<\/strong> also celebrates its 50th anniversary.
