Wilson Museum saw the return of Hollins favorites Bill White and Jan Knipe, both retired members of the art faculty, whose exhibitions<strong> <\/strong>featured new and recent work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/white_240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1079\" title=\"white_240\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/white_240.jpg\" alt=\"Bill White\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>In her essay for White\u2019s catalog, \u201cEmpathy and Engagement,\u201d art historian and curator Jennifer Samet quoted White on one of the hallmarks of his paintings: light. \u201cI am looking for a unity, especially around the issue of the light. Does it feel like the light is authentic? If it doesn\u2019t I\u2019ll abandon the painting, take it back out, do something on top of it. It is intuitive and felt, and it is about <em>empathy<\/em>\u2026\u201d About White\u2019s most recent work, a series of Paris and Roanoke rooftop paintings, Samet writes, \u201cThey have a grand orchestration of color and light, and a unity achieved with a touch that is never heavy-handed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/knipe_240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1081\" title=\"knipe_240\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hollins.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/knipe_240.jpg\" alt=\"Jan Knipe\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>Knipe is long known for her drawing, especially of landscapes and still lifes, but her newest work moves toward the abstract. In his exhibition catalog essay, \u201cObservation and Invention,\u201d art critic John Goodrich writes, \u201cDrawing as marks of pencil or charcoal on paper may be the most low-tech of the high arts, but it allows for a remarkable variety of expressions\u2026In the hands of the accomplished Jan Knipe, all these possibilities of drawing come into play in her vivid and intimate images of her visual environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photos credit: Richard Boyd<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill White and Jan Knipe mount major shows at the Wilson Last fall, the Eleanor D.
