SUMMARY:Author Reading: Kiki Petrosino
DESCRIPTION:Hollins University\nJoin us for a special reading with acclaimed poet Kiki Petrosino as part of the 2024-2025 Reading & Lecture Series hosted by the Department of English and Creative Writing. \nPetrosino will present her work “Bright\,” which explores the term used to describe light-skinned people of interracial American ancestry. The book offers a meditation on the author’s upbringing in a mixed Black and Italian American family\, weaving together memoir\, archival research\, and personal reflection to examine the legacies of enslavement and racial discrimination in America. \nKiki Petrosino is the author of “White Blood: A Lyric of Virginia” (2020) and three other poetry collections. She holds graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop and currently teaches at the University of Virginia as a Professor of Poetry. \nA Q&A session\, book signing\, and reception will follow the reading. \nAll are welcome to attend!

SUMMARY:raíces de Esperanza: The Omnipresence of Female Ancestors as Guides Through Nepantla
DESCRIPTION:Thesis Performance and Installation by \n\nMFA Dance Graduate Student Fabiola Sanchez Huidobro\n\n \n\nraíces de Esperanza: The Omnipresence of Female Ancestors as Guides Through Nepantla explores the intricate tapestry of generational rage and grief I experience as a first-generation individual navigating the emotional and spiritual landscape shaped by ancestry and migration. By examining how my female ancestors’ rage and grief intertwine with my own in a collective unconscious\, I begin to address the complexities of being caught between two worlds: Mexico\, the origin of my roots\, and America\, the land of my birth. Through personal stories and cultural reflections\, this piece seeks to uncover the profound ways these generational traumas shape the intricacies of my identity. This research highlights the connection between the spiritual and physical worlds\, bound together by blood and flesh\, ultimately providing a deeper understanding of how echoes of the past resonate in the present.\n\n \n\nThursday\, June 12\, 2025 – Live Performance\n\n7:30 p.m.\n\n \n\nFriday\, June 13 – June 29\, 2025 – Exhibition\n\nTuesday – Sunday at 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.\n\nThursday at 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:DRAFTWORKS: A Studio Salon
DESCRIPTION:DRAFTWORKS is a Dance Department and MFA Dance event inaugurated during fall 2005 and spring 2006. The platform was designed to provide a space for intimate\, non-traditional\, radical\, often-times explicit performance work to be shared with the dance department community and guests. DRAFTWORKS: A Studio Salon was designed to challenge makers and witnesses to consider options for making and presenting work that do not have to subscribe to traditional/conventional forms\, genre categorizations and notions of final dances (dance show). MFA Dance Year Residency graduate students\, Kayla Brown\, Ashley Cesiro\, Fabiola Sanchez Huidobro and Caley Vancil will share their most recent and vibrant work-in-progress in this informal studio setting.
