This is the perfect event to learn\, grow\, and connect with other writers in the area. RRWC24 takes place on January 19-20\, 2024\, at Hollins University in Roanoke. The snow date is January 26-27. The cost of the conference is $75 including lunch in the dining hall on Saturday.\n\nWe are so lucky to live in an area with incredible writers of all experiences\, genres\, and backgrounds.  RRWC24 is the ideal place to learn\, grow\, and experience the excitement that comes with your love of writing. It’s time to make your writing dreams a reality\, and we’re all here to help each other out!\n\nThe conference begins on Friday night at 7 p.m. with introductions\, our scholarship presentation\, and what I know will be an incredible keynote from premier guest Lee Hunsaker of “Hoot and Holler” fame. Saturday registration opens at 8:30 a.m.\, with classes starting at 9 a.m. Hunsaker will kick off the morning with a 2-hour workshop that will make your writer hearts sing! You’ll notice a variety of tracks during each hour throughout the day; it’s a good idea to have a backup class in mind should your first choice get filled before you can find a seat. Make sure to bring pen and paper or laptop\, as well as any writing samples you might want to share in particular classes. Our presenters can’t wait to share knowledge and advice\, and there’s no doubt you’ll leave the weekend buzzing with inspiration\, motivation and new friendships!\n\nClass topics vary from fiction and nonfiction\, journalism\, editing\, publishing (traditional and self-publishing)\, poetry\, and more. In addition\, we’re proud to promote our writing community. I highly encourage our writers to connect with others! Writing is a yearlong process and we’d love for you to join our Facebook group to promote discussion\, share in successes\, and more. We look forward to sharing our processes\, learning from each other\, and strengthening our friendships with such talented\, hardworking writers!

DESCRIPTION:Hollins University is welcoming collegiate teams from across the commonwealth to participate in the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges’ (VFIC) 24th annual Ethics Bowl\, presented by TowneBank\, January 28-29.\n\nStudent teams from Virginia’s leading independent colleges and universities will compete against one another head-to-head\, deliberating a variety of case studies relating to this year’s Ethics Bowl theme\, “Ethics and the Environment.”\n\nHollins team members include Merritt ’24\, Shasta Power ’26\, and Zoe Simotas ’25. Associate Professor of Philosophy James Downey and Visiting Assistant Professor Charles Lowney are the team’s faculty coordinators.\n\nMany notable individuals from a variety of career fields\, including business\, law\, education\, finance\, journalism\, and others\, will listen to team presentations and offer reactions to the students’ presentations.\n\nThe 2024 VFIC Ethics Bowl’s opening session takes place on Sunday\, January 28\, at 2:45 p.m. in Hollins’ Babcock Auditorium\, with the first round of competition scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in various locations in the Dana Science Building\, Moody Student Center\, and the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center. On Monday\, January 29\, rounds three and four will begin at 8:45 a.m. The final round of competition will take place at 11:20 a.m. in Babcock.\n\nThe public is invited to attend the competition rounds free of charge. The winning team will be announced at 12:30 p.m. on Monday.

DESCRIPTION:2024 Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence Ying Li: “Blossoms in a Sudden Strangeness III” exhibition through April 14\, 2024\n\nYing Li is known for her thickly painted\, abstract plein air paintings created in beautiful outdoor gardens\, landscapes\, and urbanscape settings around the world and across the United States. She has taught at Haverford College since 1997 and is currently the Phlyssa Koshland Professor of Fine Arts. In March of 2020\, the busyness of our human lives began to grind to a halt\, with classes\, exhibits\, and concerts canceled. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic\, Li created these colorful paintings while living on the Haverford campus.\n\nThe Frances Niederer Artist-in-Residence program allows Hollins to bring a nationally recognized artist to campus every year. SUMMARY:Author of "The Black Middle Ages\," Matthew X. Vernon
DESCRIPTION:Vernon is the author of The Black Middle Ages: Race and the Construction of the Middle Ages\, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2018\, which examines the influence of medieval studies on African American thought. Vernon focuses on nineteenth century uses of medieval texts to structure racial identity\, but also considers the flexibility of medieval narratives more broadly in the medieval period\, twentieth\, and twenty-first centuries. This book engages disparate discourses to reassess African American positionalities in time and space. Utilizing a transhistorical framework\, Vernon reflects on medieval studies as a discipline built upon a contended set of ideologies and acts of imaginative appropriation visible within source texts and their later mobilizations. An associate professor of English at the University of California\, Davis\, his academic interests include medieval literature\, travel narratives\, migration\, film\, and comic books. He earned his B.A. from Cornell University and completed his M.A.\, M.Phil.\, and Ph.D. at Yale University.\n\n \n\nSponsored by the Department of English and Creative Writing and the Dee Hull Everist Visiting Speaker Fund.

DESCRIPTION:Brown is the author of The Donkey Elegies (Sibling Rivalry Press\, 2020); Fanny Says (BOA Editions\, 2015)\, a biography in poems about Brown’s grandmother\, which won the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry; and Sister (Sibling Rivalry Press)\, which was first published in 2007 and reissued in 2018. To Those Who Were Our First Gods\, a chapbook of nine poems published by Rattle\, won the 2018 Rattle Prize. With Jessica Jacobs\, she cowrote Write It! 100 Poetry Prompts to Inspire (Spruce Books\, 2020). She is Hollins’ Spring 2024 Writer-in-Residence and teaches in the Sewanee School of Letters’ M.F.A. program\, the Great Smokies Writing Program at the University of North Carolina Asheville\, and in the SunJune Literary Collaborative. Brown received her M.F.A. from the Vermont College of Fine Arts\, studied literature at Oxford University\, and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. SUMMARY:Nationally Known Psychologist and Author to Discuss “Hope in a Time of Monsters”
DESCRIPTION:Professor and education expert Sarah Rose Cavanagh\, author of the new book Mind Over Monsters: Supporting Youth Mental Health with Compassionate Challenge\, will speak in Hollins University’s Babcock Auditorium on Monday\, March 4\, at 9 a.m. Admission is free and open to the public.\n\nCavanagh is the senior associate director for teaching and learning at Simmons University\, where she also teaches in the psychology department as an associate professor of practice. Her research considers the interplay of emotions\, motivation\, learning\, and quality of life. In addition to Mind Over Monsters\, she has written three other books\, including The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion (2016). She blogs for Psychology Today and has penned essays for Literary Hub and The Chronicle of Higher Education.\n\n“We are excited at Hollins to welcome a nationally known author to speak on one of the most pressing issues of our time: supporting student mental health\,” says Nora Kizer Bell Provost Laura McLary. “Cavanagh also engages deeply in ways to support the mental health of faculty and staff in their roles as both teachers and mentors of students.”\n\nIn her interactive presentation\, “Hope in a Time of Monsters: Supporting Faculty and Student Mental Health\,” Cavanagh will offer research\, food for thought\, and practical applications based on her book on how higher education should respond to both faculty depletion and the student mental health crisis.\n\n“The last several years of disruption\, uncertainty\, and overburdened workloads have exhausted teachers and students alike\,” Cavanagh says. “Monsters have reared their heads\, and we have understandably shrunk from them. Faculty are burnt out and students are experiencing an epidemic of mental health problems\, especially anxiety.”\n\nIn order to support their mental health and reinvigorate their learning\, Cavanagh asserts that “students need both compassion and care on the one hand\, and assistance in developing competence and self-efficacy on the other. Faculty need relief from overburdened workloads\, but also to reignite their love of teaching. Her work has appeared in The New York Times\, Green Mountains Review\, Callaloo\, STIR Journal\, African American Review\, The University Florida Journal\, and Tusculum Review. Smith adapted From Whence Cometh My Help into a stage play entitled African Violets. Smith is a Professor Emeritus at West Virginia University. She has also taught at Carlow University\, Monash University (Australia)\, Randolph College\, University of Canterbury (New Zealand)\, Virginia Tech\, and Universität Tübingen (Germany). SUMMARY:Empowering Women through Education with Guest Speaker: Verletta White\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:A results-driven\, student-centered\, visionary leader\, Verletta White\, Ph.D. was appointed superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) on July 1\, 2020. She has been recognized regionally and nationally for her ability to bring together communities for the benefit of students. In 2023\, she was named Virginia’s 2024 State Superintendent of the Year\, Virginia’s Region VI Superintendent of the Year\, and was also touted as one of the five superintendents in the nation to watch by K-12 Dive.\n\nOften referring to Roanoke City as “the sweetest city on earth\,” White is involved and engaged within the community. She serves on boards and advisory councils for many local\, regional\, and state organizations.\n\nWhite holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Towson University\, a Master of Arts degree in leadership in teaching from the Notre Dame of Maryland University\, and a Doctor of Education degree in urban educational leadership from Morgan State University.\n\nWhite and her husband\, Sidney\, are the proud parents of two grown children\, Victoria and Bethany\, both of whom graduated from public schools.
