SUMMARY:DRAFTWORKS: A Studio Salon
DESCRIPTION:DRAFTWORKS is a dance department and M.F.A. dance event inaugurated during fall 2005 and spring 2006. The platform was designed to provide a space for intimate\, nontraditional\, radical\, often-times explicit performance work to be shared with the dance department community and guests. DRAFTWORKS: A Studio Salon was designed to challenge makers and witnesses to consider options for making and presenting work that does not have to subscribe to traditional/conventional forms\, genre categorizations\, and notions of final dances (dance show). M.F.A. Dance Year Residency graduate student\, Eiby Lobos\, will share their most recent and vibrant work-in-progress in this informal studio setting

SUMMARY:No Shame Theatre
DESCRIPTION:No Shame Theatre is an experiential performance lab where writers\, performers\, and audience are constantly changing roles. Anything can happen and usually does in this late-night venue for original work. We take the first 15 pieces to walk in the door and there are only three rules: pieces must be original (no copyright violations)\, short (five minutes or less)\, and not break anything (including the law). Inside those rules you can do pretty much anything you’re interested in trying in front of a live audience—plays\, monologues\, songs\, dance\, poetry\, mime\, juggling\, comedy\, tragedy\, improvisation\, dada\, magic—we’ve even seen people do floral arrangements! Pieces are accepted starting at 10 p.m.\, doors open at 10:30 p.m.\, and the show starts at 11 p.m.\, running on average an hour and a half. Admission: free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Writing Intensive: The Path to Publication
DESCRIPTION:Hollins University’s graduate programs in children’s literature are renowned for their emphasis on the study\, writing\, and illustration of work in that field. We also offer one-week intensive workshops for teachers and librarians\, aspiring authors and illustrators\, and alumnae/i of Hollins’ undergraduate and graduate programs. Whether you want to grow your skills as a picture book creator\, scholar\, or selector\, or would like to enhance your ability to write for children\, these workshops offer practical guidance through the expertise of accomplished artists and authors.\nWriting Intensive: The Path to Publication\nYou’ve spent months (or\, very likely\, years!) writing and editing your novel\, workshopping and rereading and editing again\, and you are ready to seek out traditional publication. What’s next? This intensive\, run by literary agent Erin Clyburn\, will cover all the steps you need to take your work from manuscript to book: crafting a query letter\, learning what comp titles are (and how to find yours)\, researching which agents to query\, writing a synopsis\, making sure your first page shines\, learning about the market\, seeing what your agent relationship might look like\, and working on your platform (and knowing if you need one at all).\n\nThis intensive is a 20-hour advanced tutorial intended for authors of novel-length works (chapter books\, middle grade\, and young adult) who have completed or near-completed manuscripts and are preparing to seek traditional publication. The goal of the intensive is for you to finish the week with a polished query package and an understanding of how to seek out and approach the right agent for your work. The workshop has a minimum of six participants and a maximum of 10\, on a first-registered\, first-served basis.\n\nInstructor: Erin Clyburn\n\n More Information Here (PDF)\n Workshop Details (PDF)\n Printable Registration Form (PDF)

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Lab Readings
DESCRIPTION:June 28: Do Not Go Gentle\, by Robert Watts\nThese readings\, which are early drafts of student-written plays\, are presented as part of the Playwright’s Lab course. The reading is followed by a two-tier feedback session. The first tier is based on the Liz Lerman Critical Response\, with the playwright taking notes on audience reactions to things that worked\, questions they feel are still unanswered\, things that didn’t work as well as the strengths we identified earlier\, and questions that the playwright might have. The second tier of feedback is closed\, and only students registered for the course and faculty attend. This session is less structured\, and playwrights can engage with commenters directly. In this way\, students are exposed to both kinds of feedback so that they have a nurturing environment as well as preparation for the more raw responses one could encounter in a review or blog comments.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Lab Readings
DESCRIPTION:July 5: Dead Inside\, by Tatiana Alexis\nThese readings\, which are early drafts of student-written plays\, are presented as part of the Playwright’s Lab course.

SUMMARY:Overnight Sensations
DESCRIPTION:Since 2006\, the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins has partnered with Mill Mountain Theatre to present a micro-brewed theatre festival. On Friday night six playwrights are randomly paired with six directors\, who then randomly draw from a hat a variety of writing prompts and a preselected cast of local actors. Before 9 a.m. the next morning\, they have to write a 10-minute play. They meet with their directors over a continental breakfast on Saturday morning and make any last-minute changes before the actors arrive and the plays begin rehearsal. When 8 p.m. rolls around\, and the audience are in their seats\, the show begins!

SUMMARY:Writing for Children Intensive: Writing is Rewriting
DESCRIPTION:Hollins University’s graduate programs in children’s literature are renowned for their emphasis on the study\, writing\, and illustration of work in that field. We also offer one-week intensive workshops for teachers and librarians\, aspiring authors and illustrators\, and alumnae/i of Hollins’ undergraduate and graduate programs. Whether you want to grow your skills as a picture book creator\, scholar\, or selector\, or would like to enhance your ability to write for children\, these workshops offer practical guidance through the expertise of accomplished artists and authors.\nWriting for Children Intensive: Writing is Rewriting\nFinished a first draft? Or have a solid chunk of a novel? Now what? The best writers are really revisers. Join this intensive to find the right ingredients to transform your rough pages into a compelling book for young people. Writing demands complex characters\, high stakes\, a layered world\, and research.\n\nIn this workshop\, the emphasis will be on the building blocks of craft: the one-line pitch\, voice and character\, worldbuilding\, plot and pace\, and revision.\n\nThe core of the intensive is an 18-hour intermediate to advanced writing tutorial. Limited to eight to 12 participants on a first-registered\, first-served basis\, the participants will exchange up to 50-75 pages of work with the instructor and other writers in the class.\n\nInstructor: Dhonielle Clayton\n\n More Information Here (PDF)\n Workshop Details (PDF)\n Printable Registration Form (PDF)
