DESCRIPTION:Class runs Monday-Tuesday\, 9 am-5 pm with a two-hour lunch break\, and Wednesday\, with one-on-one critiques from 9 am-noon\, followed by a program talk at 1 pm: “Not Sticking to the Rules”\n\nMonday and Tuesday experience an interactive workshop covering the basics of children’s book creation\, best practices\, hooks\, rhyming\, humor\, and rule-breaking with writing exercises and feedback from Frances and fellow students\, along with a behind the scenes description about how acquisitions meetings work and the process from submission to publication\, all from an industry insider.\n\nPut what you’ve learned to work on Wednesday morning with one-on-one critiques followed by a program talk open to all Hollins students at 1 pm on “Not Sticking to the Rules.”\n\nWith this model\, you move from 15 hours of instruction (6-9 pm) to the same – 15 hours of instruction\, that now includes one-on-one manuscript reviews.\n\nINSTRUCTOR: \n\nFrances Gilbert\, VP\, editor-in-chief of Doubleday Books for Young Readers\n\nTo learn more about each workshop and register\, visit hollins.edu/childrenslit-workshops.\n\nQUESTIONS? SUMMARY:Ashley Belote\, Author/Illustrator Talk
DESCRIPTION:Belote is the illustrator of Frankenslime and Valenslime. She is the author-illustrator of her debut early reader The Me Tree and her picture book Listen Up\, Louella. She studied traditional animation under the direction of Don Bluth. Belote is a West Virginia native and earned her B.A. from Alderson Broaddus University. She earned her M.A. in arts administration from the University of Kentucky. Her graduate study included a children’s literature and illustration course\, The Whole Book Approach\, through Simmons College at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. She also serves as the illustrator coordinator for the Carolinas chapter of SCBWI. Belote is represented by Moe Ferrara of BookEnds Literary Agency.\n\nLecture\, Monday\, July 15\, 6:30 pm\, Wetherill Visual Arts Center\, Room 119\, followed by a book signing in the lobby. DESCRIPTION:Each Monday night on the Waldron Stage of Mill Mountain Theatre\, the Playwright’s Lab at Hollins presents a talk by a prominent working professional theatre artist. This week’s guest is:\n\nBONNIE METZGAR – GUEST SPEAKER\n\nMetzgar is a playwright\, screenwriter\, director\, producer\, and core visiting faculty with The Playwright’s Lab at Hollins. In January 2020\, her play You Lost Me had its world premiere at Denver Center Theater and was the recipient of an Edgerton New Play Award. Recently\, she served as staff writer for Genius: Aretha\, a limited television series with showrunner Suzan-Lori Parks. A fighter for artists from marginalized communities\, Metzgar is passionate about making systemic change in the nonprofit theatre\, and served as artistic director of About Face Theatre\, one of the largest theatres in the U.S. dedicated to producing queer artists and advancing the cultural dialogue on sexuality and gender identity. Previously\, Metzgar served as associate producer at the Public Theater where she founded Joe’s Pub.\n\nMill Mountain Theatre\, Waldron Stage
