Angel Rally Spoils Tournament Opener

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Volleyball vs Meredith College at 2012 Hollins Invitational September 7, 2012

Box Score

A week after opening the season 2-2 at the Averett University Cougar Classic, Hollins hosted a seven team tournament this weekend.  The first opponent for Hollins was Meredith College.  The Angels came into the match with a 3-1 record but Hollins was looking to get off to a quick start on their home court.

Hollins did just that, taking the first set 25-23.  Hollins continued to look impressive by leading the entire way in the second set and looked like they were on their way to a win after taking the second frame 25-21.  However, Meredith had other ideas and behind a 15 kill third set found themselves back in the match.  After dropping the third set 18-25, Hollins and Meredith found themselves in a close fourth set.  The Angels were able to pull out the win by the slimmest of margins, 25-23, setting up a fifth and decisive set.  Hollins never really got in a rhythm in the fifth and found themselves trailing mid-way through.  A Hollins rally saw them close the Meredith lead to 13-14.  Meredith however was able to record just their third kill of the set but it was enough as Hollins fell 13-15.

Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake, VA) led the Hollins offense with 11 kills while Ally Reed (Sterling, VA) added 10.  Setter Lela Moore (Woodleaf, NC) again led Hollins with 35 assists to go with her match high four service aces.  Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) picked up a team high 24 digs while Ortiz (15) and Reed (12) also reached double digits.

Cori Spade recorded a match high 35 kills to lead the Meredith offense.  Kara Baughman handed out 27 assists and teammate Clarke Glendenning added 25.  Spade also had three of the Angel's eight serving aces.

Hollins will be back in action later tonight.  Hollins is scheduled to face Wesleyan College at 7:00pm
