Competition

At the collegiate level, showing horses is considered an individual as well as a team sport. Hollins riders compete in several types of horse shows, including high-quality local shows, AA shows, and the prestigious ODAC competition — as well as the highly competitive intercollegiate horse shows.

Hollins hosts as well as travels to high-quality hunter shows in the area that are sanctioned by the Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association in which riders may compete for high-score awards. Hollins horses have won many of these honors.

Riders may qualify for the competitive SWVH/JA and VHSA Adult Medal Finals, which Hollins students have won numerous times over the years.

Hollins’ high-caliber horses allow students to compete successfully at the AA level, including such shows as the Lexington National, the Virginia Intermont Classic, and the Lexington Spring Premiere, held at the Virginia Horse Center.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) team competition, which Hollins has dominated for many years, is made up of the four best horse/rider combinations from the five member colleges who compete in an equitation format. Hollins coaches have been named coach of the year for 13 of the last 15 years.

The IHSA equitation shows include all levels of riders, from walk trot through the Medal/Maclay competitor. Riders travel to the host school and show horses provided by that college or university. The Hollins team has qualified for the national IHSA show for the last eight years in a row - a national record.

The Hollins IHSA team is chosen by the coaches, who watch the riders in class and assess overall position, execution, adaptability, as well as the riders’ competitive nature.

After graduating, Hollins riders continue to successfully compete as professionals and amateurs.
