Hollins Returns Home With Victory

Rocky Mount, NC - Hollins University Lacrosse at NC Wesleyan College, March 3, 2013

Box Score

For the second consecutive day, the Hollins lacrosse team was in action.  After tough loss to Agnes Scott on Saturday, Hollins faced off with North Carolina Wesleyan on a balmy, Sunday afternoon.  Both teams came into the non-conference match looking for their first win of the young season.

The home team struck first, netting the game's initial goal less than two minutes into the contest.  As they did yesterday, Hollins scored the next two goals to take the lead.  Three unanswered Bishop goals and it appeared Hollins was destined for their second straight loss.  However, the road team had other plans and answered with four straight goals of their own.  Hollins held a two goal advantage with the clock winding down but North Carolina Wesleyan cut the lead to a single goal in the half's final seconds.  The Bishops tied the score by finding the back of the Hollins net early in the second half.  With neither team gaining any offensive momentum the game remained knotted at 6-6 going into the final 15 minutes of play.  Hollins scored to take the lead and added another late goal en route to the first win of the 2013 season, 8-6.

Meg O'Brien (Chattanooga, TN) scored three goals for Hollins, including the first two of the contest.  Lindley Taylor (Reston, VA) added two goals and five ground balls while last year's defensive stalwart Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) scored one goal to go with her game high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Brandi Chesne (Hammond, LA) scored her third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead with O'Brien and Taylor, and first-year Yasmeen Latore (McDonough, GA) scored once for the visitors.  Corrine Nicholson (Takoma Park, MD) picked up her first win of the season while recording 10 saves.

Haley Hopkins led the Bishops with three goals and five ground balls.  Ashley Marks added two goals and an assist while Jade Gold picked up a goal and one helper.  Marissa Santos saved 10 but pick up the loss in net.

Hollins will be back on the road, as they start the season with four straight away from Roanoke, on Tuesday March 5th.  Hollins will travel to, ODAC preseason #1, Washington and Lee for their first ODAC game of the season.
