Marlins Hold Off Hollins Charge

Roanoke, VA - Hollins University Basketball vs Virginia Wesleyan College, January 5, 2013

Box Score

The Hollins University basketball team played host to Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.  The Marlins came into the match-up with a 2-1 ODAC mark while Hollins was attempting to pick up their first conference win of the season.

Hollins cam out of the gate quickly, hitting a three pointer in the opening minutes and pulling out to a 7-6 lead to start the game.  However, the pressure defense of Virginia Wesleyan caused a series of turnovers and the Marlins made their hosts pay by building a 10 points lead at the mid-way point of the first half.  Down 14, Hollins hit a three pointer in the waning minutes to go into the break on the short end of a 28-17 score.  The home team came out in the second half and cut the lead to just three points with 14 minutes left to play.  The teams traded baskets before the Marlins again went on a run to expand the lead once again to double figures.  Hollins took care of the ball much better in the second half, after committing 15 first half turnovers, and didn't let VWC pull away.  trailing by eight with five minutes to play, Hollins started their final rally and twice cut the lead to three points in the games final minutes.  The Marlins hit their free throws down the stretch and held on for a hard fought 57-53 ODAC win.

The senior backcourt of Jasmine Greene (Hampton, VA) and Lacie Forrest (Richmond, VA) once again led the way for Hollins.  Greene, the ODAC's second leading scorer, led the team with 16 points and five assists.  Forrest continued her hot shooting from Wednesday night en route to 15 points.  Post player Chanci Wright (Eden, TX) grabbed a game high 11 rebounds to go with her eight points while fellow six footer Lauren Hays (Saginaw, TX) came off the bench to add five points and eight rebounds.

Brittany Glasco led the Marlins with 17 points and six rebounds while reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year Sarah Seipp added 16 points and five rebounds.  Nancy Kelly scored 10 points.

Hollins will continue their home stand on Monday as the step out of conference to host Hood College.  The game with Hood will tip at 7:00pm and can be seen live on the web.
