The Secular Society Scholars
The Secular Scholars (TSS) are a select group of entering first-year students at Hollins who demonstrate creativity and a passion for the breadth that a liberal arts education can provide. They are students who have been active and engaged throughout their high school years and who seek learning experiences outside the classroom. The program develops and supports them in their creative endeavors, preparing them for lifelong contributions to the University, state, nation, and world.
Up to five students will be selected for this full-tuition, four-year award based on an open application process designed to gain a sense of the student’s motivation and aptitude for creative academic work and enthusiasm for activities beyond the classroom. In addition, selected students will receive a one-time award of $2,500 to be used for research initiatives, study abroad programs, or internships during their time at Hollins. The selection committee considers each student individually, evaluating her application in a highly personalized manner. While grades and test scores are important, the committee is aware that they don’t represent the whole student, and as a result, they are not used to automatically include or exclude an applicant from consideration. A selection of The Secular Society Scholars candidates will be invited to participate in an interview weekend held on campus in mid-late February. To be considered you must submit your application for admission and scholarship application by December 1, 2017.
The Secular Society Hollins Visitor Program brings two distinguished women from various walks of life and professions to campus each academic year for two distinct purposes. The program strives to enhance the knowledge and skills of Hollins students and faculty by exposing them to expertise beyond what is found on campus, and introduce accomplished women to the benefits and enrichment that women’s education and the Hollins experience in particular bestow.
