We devoted the month of April, 2014 to what we called the Pilgrim Project in honor of the 40th anniversary of publication of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Annie Dillard’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work of nonfiction. Dillard received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Hollins.
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek: The Theatrical Odyssey
The centerpiece of the month was Pilgrim at Tinker Creek: The Theatrical Odyssey, the premiere of a theatrical adaptation of Dillard’s work, which aimed to honor her glorious and exacting prose, while inviting the audience into dramatic moments of imagery and sensations that reverberate with startling awareness. This work was part of the Hollins Theatre Legacy Series.
“You can heave your spirit into a mountain and the mountain will keep it, folded, and not throw it back as some creeks will. The creeks are the world with all its stimulus and beauty; I live there. But the mountains are home.”
Annie Dillard, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek
Month-long celebration of “green”
In the spirit of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, the Hollins community celebrated our physical, spiritual, and philosophical connection to the Earth. Throughout the month of April the entire campus exploded with imaginative events, activities, and reflections as we turned our collective thoughts gloriously “greenward.”
