The Batten Leadership Institute (BLI) enjoys local and national speakers who talk with students about important concerns that may face them as future graduates. BLI offers classes in critical leadership skills, teams, and applications of contemporary leadership theories using consultation and mentoring opportunities. Students may choose to take only one or two classes, or they have the option to pursue a certificate in leadership studies. The program is open to all interested undergraduates and does not require an application process, although BLI 101, Leadership Skills, is the entry point for all students.

What You'll Learn
Constant State of Reflection
Every semester we have to pick a leadership goal. Everybody knows your goal and can help you identify areas where you can do more. It’s that constant state of reflection that helps you move forward.Becca Rowe
The experiences I had in BLI prepared me to listen to my students’ stories in the Teach for America program and to show empathy, while still holding my students to high standards.Katy Allamong
Growing Your Edge
We help students expand their edge of what they are able to do as leaders. When students accept our invitation to enter the program, they give us permission to push and challenge them in an incredibly supportive environment. We think of it as a little tough love alongside our unwavering belief in a universal capacity for change and growth.Executive Director Abrina Schnurman-Crook
