Murphy Daniel Murphy, Professor

Daniel Murphy has taught at Hollins since 1993. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His research interests include Golden-Age poetry, 20th-century Spanish and Spanish-American poetry, and Spanish culture. He has published an article in the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies on Fray Luis de León and is the author of Vicente Aleixandre's Stream of Lyric Consciousness (Bucknell University Press, 2001). He has also given talks at national and international conferences. Professor Murphy is an advisor to Spanish majors and first-year students, and is the faculty co-advisor to the Spanish House. Ridley Alison Ridley, Dean of Academic Services and Associate Professor

Alison Ridley came to Hollins in 1991 after completing her Ph.D. at Michigan State University. Professor Ridley's research interests include the Spanish picaresque and 20th-century Spanish drama. She has published articles on the Spanish dramatist Antonio Buero Vallejo and the picaresque novel Guzmán de Alfarache. She has also given papers at national and international conferences. Professor Ridley serves as an advisor to Spanish majors and first-year students, and is the faculty co-advisor to the Spanish House. She is also the faculty sponsor of Sigma Delta Pi, the national Hispanic honor society. She can be reached via e-mail at: aridley@hollins.edu


Elda Stanco Rojas Elda Stanco, Assistant Professor

Elda Stanco is our newest faculty member, having joined us in 2004. She holds a Ph.D. from Brown University. Her research interests include urban novels, 20th-century Latin American literature, and women writers. She is the author of an article in Romance Review on Venezuelan author Ana Teresa Torres. Professor Stanco is an advisor to Spanish majors and first-year students, and is the faculty advisor to the Spanish Club and to the bilingual newsletter, La Mezcla.

Her essay, "Of Voyages and Broken Borders," published in the anthology Imagining Ourselves: Global Voices From a New Generation of Women is featured in the anthology's accompanying online interactive exhibit. Stanco's essay was a May 2006 feature in the online exhibit, and has once again been selected as a feature for the month of September 2006. The Imagining Ourselves global project connects women in their twenties and thirties around the globe, inspiring them to create positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world. It is sponsored by the International Museum of Women (San Francisco), and may be viewed at http://www.imow.org.
