Elizabeth Valk Long

"I developed my leadership and competitive skills in an environment where gender wasn't an issue. Never did a class office or team or job opportunity seem off-limits."

Elizabeth
Valk Long
'72,
a political science major and former executive vice president of Time Inc.

"One of the greatest strengths of the political science major is that the professors encourage 'intellectual recklessness.' For example, I chose a very controversial topic on which to write my senior honors thesis. When I gave my oral defense, I entertained questions from the department for an hour and a half -- they really grilled me. That was a grueling afternoon, but the exchange of ideas that took place that day was one of the best experiences I have ever had in academics. Even if the professors didn't agree with the arguments I made, they respected my taking an intellectual risk."

"The best choice I made at Hollins was to major in political science. The program has a reputation for being extremely difficult, and that reputation is derived from the fact that the issues concerning society, government, and power are explored from as many angles as possible, with the professors always urging the students to analyze beyond the obvious. The program is well balanced in insisting that all students study both American and international politics. The professors are brilliant, with expertise in international studies -- Korean politics, Canadian politics, and Latin American studies -- and the domestic scene as well, such as welfare law and the presidency. The faculty have also had between them a variety of positions in government, which makes them even more knowledgeable about their subjects, and also enlivens class discussion."
