Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages offers majors in French and Spanish and programs of study in German, Japanese and Chinese.
Many students who study a modern language at Hollins take the opportunity to study abroad. We make study abroad as accessible as possible by offering numerous programs for students, applying abroad credits to graduation requirements, and enabling students to apply all of their financial aid, including Hollins grants and scholarships, to any Hollins or affiliated program.
Japanese
Hollins offers Japanese 101, 102 and 111,112 on our campus through our Visiting Professor of Japanese, Yasuko Kumazawa. Professor Kumazawa also teaches elementary and intermediate Japanese at Roanoke College. In addition to these offerings, Professor Kumazawa offers advanced classes in Japanese to a mixed group of both Hollins and Roanoke College students; those classes are taught either on the Hollins or Roanoke College campus and are carefully arranged with all of the students so that all who want to pursue Japanese beyond the intermediate level will have the opportunity to do so.
Additionally, Hollins offers students of Japanese and Asian Studies the opportunity to study in Japan at Kansai Gaidai University. Further information may be found on the Hollins Abroad page on our Web site.

Chinese
Hollins is able to offer elementary Chinese through a shared program with Roanoke College where Hollins students may enroll at Roanoke College in a limited number of spaces open to them in elementary Chinese. A Fulbright scholar and native speaker teaches Chinese language and culture. As the program grows, Hollins hopes to expand the offerings in Chinese.
