Communication
Studies

Class photoAs a communication studies major at Hollins, you will benefit from a unique combination of breadth and depth of focus. You will learn about communication processes in a wide variety of contexts and will be able to combine communication classes with related offerings in film and photography, political science, business, or sociology. Yet you will also work with your advisor to personally tailor your major to prepare for professional or graduate school or for a career in media, management, public relations, or a variety of other fields.
You will get to know your professors in our small, relaxed classes, and your professors will get to know you and your interests. The result is that course projects and activities are designed with those interests in mind.
  • Students in Media Law and Policy learn online legal research techniques, and take a trip to Washington, D.C., for an exclusive F.C.C. briefing on current communication regulatory issues.
  • In Organizational Communication, students learn first-hand about the world of work from women in a variety of professions, while actively planning and coordinating the annual panel presentation, "Women Talking Work." Speakers have included a neurosurgeon, the CEO of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee, artists, and entrepreneurs.
  • Students in International Communication debate global communication issues while researching and producing Web pages for the most exciting new global communication medium, the Internet
  • Writing for Print Media I and II, hands-on journalism courses, are team taught by professional journalists, John Muncie and Jodi Jaffe. John was the editor for arts and entertainment at the Baltimore Sun and Jodi was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for their work with The Charlotte Observer. Additionally, Writing for Electronic Media is taught by WSLS broadcaster, Jay Warren.
  • In other courses, students have worked on projects ranging from the production of their own 'zines (Alternative Media) to presentations on the role of technology in our culture (Introduction to Communication)

Finally, the benefits of your liberal arts education will be complemented by the career emphasis of your internship experiences. You will take advantage of internship opportunities during the January Term and throughout the year to explore career paths in communication.

A one-million-dollar gift will endow a chair in communication studies at Hollins. Kathryn O'Keeffe, a member of the Hollins class of 1939, has established the Kathryn O'Keeffe Chair in Communication Studies at her alma mater. Her gift will support faculty excellence in the communication studies major.

Becky Hawke

"I have no doubt that my Hollins education played in integral role in where I am today.¬ÝIn addition to the stimulating classroom discussions, hands-on assignments, and close relationships with my professors, I was able to snag an extended internship at a local tv news station that eventually led to a job as an associate producer during my junior and senior years of school. I graduated fully confident that my communication skills, specifically those in technical and creative writing, could cut it in the 'real world' -- because they already had."
