Classical Studies
Faculty
We are young and trained in interdisciplinary programs -- classical
studies -- that combine the disciplines of philology, history, and
archaeology, a breadth reflected in our curriculum and research.

George Fredric Franko professor; Ph.D., Columbia University; B.A., The College of William and Mary
Professor Franko specializes in Latin literature and ancient
comedy. His keen interest in drama has led to acting roles in
the Forum Romanum, a Latin news program, and in Hollins
production of The Menaechmi. He has published in leading
journals of classical philology and makes a mean green salsa.

Christina A. Salowey
(homepage), associate professor; Ph.D., Bryn Mawr College; M.A., Tufts University; M.S., Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; B.A., Muhlenberg College
Professor Salowey specializes in Greek art and archaeology and
religion. She is interested in pedagogical issues and serves
on the board of the North American Cambridge Classics Project.
She co-directs an archaeological survey in Arcadia, bicycling
to all her sites, and continues extensive research in the cult
and labors of Herakles.

| Though our department
is small, we offer a remarkably broad curriculum in Greek and
Latin language, literature in translation, ancient art, and
ancient history. Other faculty at Hollins enrich our curriculum
with courses in ancient philosophy, religion, and history. All
classics courses taught in English are cross-listed with other
departments (art, English, history, theatre, women's studies),
and count towards the fulfillment of requirements of other majors. |
