As a freshman, I never imagined that in four years I would have lived in the rainforests of Australia, obtained a fellowship at the CDC [Centers for Disease Control], or become a member of Sigma Xi [natural sciences honorary organization]. Hollins gave me the opportunities and the confidence to go out and pursue things that had only been distant daydreams before. I cannot say enough about our wonderful biology department. I think one reason biology majors are so successful is that Hollins gives many research opportunities to their students. Ask anyone in science: When it comes to getting into med, vet, and grad school, or even obtaining a job or fellowship, it is research experience that gets you in. I have had tons of chances to perform research projects outside of our regular labs. For example, I assessed the health of a creek and provided data that the county then used to create a restoration plan. I have performed an honors thesis as well as senior research and then was able to participate in a research project in an internship at the CDC over a J-Term. Liz was awarded a yearlong fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control. After that, she plans to attend graduate school in microbiology or ecology.
