Erin Leigh Adams knew exactly what career she wanted to pursue before she came to Hollins. A sophomore from Eaton, Ohio, she is majoring in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. One of the things she likes best about the university is that students are actively engaged in research.
During J-term, she did an independent study in which she was asked to figure out how to use an analog EEG machine that measures brain waves and produces printouts of brain scans. Her professors handed her the instruction booklet and told her to simplify it. The independent study taught her how to use equipment that will be valuable for research, as well as how to read scientific instructions.
Outside of class, Erin has been involved in a variety of groups. She has been an admissions ambassador, helping to introduce Hollins to prospective students. She has also participated in the Batten Leadership Institute, and she founded a campus group called SCAVAS (Students Against Viruses, Adware and Spyware).
During summer 2007, Erin volunteered with Hands for Help Nepal, a Nepali-based NGO that focuses on placing foreign volunteers around Nepal to each English, work in construction or at orphanages, or to volunteer at health posts. To learn more about Erin's experience, read her blog.
After graduation, Erin plans to go straight to graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Her focus will be on research and mental disorders.
