Parent Orientation: Fall 2008
This is a tentative schedule. You will receive an updated schedule upon arrival on campus.
Thursday, August 28, 2008
9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Check-In. Moody Student Center.
This one-stop check-in will include opportunities to take care of important business with many campus offices. Students will also have their photos taken for student IDs at this time, and residential students will receive their room keys.

9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Move-In: Time to Unpack. Tinker, Randolph, and West Residence Halls.
“Movers and Shakers” will be on hand to help new residential students move in. Information Technology Services will be in residence halls beginning at noon to assist with computer set-up. Housing information, water, tools, and supplies will be available in the Tinker Coffee House, Randolph Social Room, and the West Lounge on the first floor.

11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Vendors' Fair. Back Quad (rain location: Rathskellar, Moody Student Center).
Representatives from local businesses including shops, banks, hotels, restaurants, and cell phone companies will be on hand with their products and services.

11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch.
Feel free to join your daughter for lunch in the Main Dining Room, Moody Student Center.

Cost:  $5.75.

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Commuter Student Check-In.  Moody Student Center.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. 

Legacy Student Reception.  Cromer Bergman Alumnae House.
If you have a relative who attended or graduated from Hollins, you are invited for light refreshments and Tinker cake.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Commuter Student Reception. Rathskellar, lower level, Moody Student Center.
While residential students are moving into their rooms on campus, commuter students and their families are invited to this reception where they can get to know one another.

3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. ABC’s of Financial Aid and Paying for Your Hollins Education.  duPont Chapel.
Representatives from Scholarships and Financial Assistance, the Business Office, and the Career Center will be on hand to answer any questions students and parents have about paying for your Hollins education.

3:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.

Understanding Your Daughter’s Academic Path. duPont Chapel.
Parents will receive an overview of academic policies and programs including first-year seminars, the first-year experience, advising, the ESP general education program, short term, degree and graduation requirements, and FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law that protects the rights and privacy of a student’s educational records).

5:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. Looking Ahead: The Road to Commencement. Front Quad (rain location: duPont Chapel).
New students officially begin their journey at Hollins with family and friends looking on.  President Nancy Oliver Gray, SGA President, and Dr. Patricia Hammer, associate professor of mathematics and co-director of the first-year experience, will speak at this welcoming ceremony.

5:45 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. Picnic Dinner. Front Quad (rain location: Main Dining Room, Moody Student Center).
Parents, students, and the Hollins community enjoy a time of celebration with music, food, and laughter. 

7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Welcome Reception.  President’s House.
Parents/Guardians and new students are invited to meet President Gray in her home.  Dessert will be served. 

Friday, August 29, 2008
8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Breakfast.
Feel free to join your daughter for breakfast in the Main Dining Room, Moody Student Center.

Cost:  $4.75.
8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. President's Welcome. Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.
President Gray, along with Dr. Jeanine Stewart, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Patty O’Toole, Dean of Students, will present a brief introduction and answer any questions parents may have.

9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. "Letting Go." Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.
A student’s first year at college, or her first year in a new college, can be tricky for parents to navigate, too.  Jane Hundley, counselor for health and counseling services, offers insight and advice. 

9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Parents Council Panel. Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building. 
The president of the parents council and council members will answer questions about your daughters’ first year at Hollins.

10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Housing and Residence Life Presentation. Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.
The assistant dean of students/director of housing & residence life and members of her staff will provide information relating to residence life at Hollins, and present vignettes about likely conversations between parents and daughters during the first year.

12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Lunch.
Feel free to join your daughter for lunch in the Main Dining Room, Moody Student Center.

12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. 

Bookshop ReceptionBookshop, Lower Level Moody Student Center.
Please stop by and see what the bookshop has to offer.

1:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Hollins Honor Code. Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.
All students are bound by the Hollins Honor Code.  We will share the history of the Hollins Honor Code and how it fosters student growth and development.  We will look at how it operates today and review student expectations.

2:15 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. Campus Resource Panel. Babcock Auditorium, Dana Science Building.
Representatives from several areas on campus including Health & Counseling Services, Campus Safety, Information Technologies, Facilities, and the Career Center will briefly discuss their areas and answer questions.

4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Becoming a Member of the Hollins Community.  Babcock, Dana Science Building.
The dean of students will facilitate a conversation on how parents/guardians and university community members can work together collaboratively.

5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Dinner. Main Dining Room, Moody Student Center.

Saturday, August 30, 2008
9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Celebrate Your Spirituality (optional). Gordh Room, duPont Center.
Small group gatherings for Christian, Jewish, and other spiritual paths.

10:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. 

Class Photo with Parents/Guardians.  The Rock.
Students and parents/guardians will meet at The Rock for a class photo.  You will also have the opportunity to have individual photos taken with your daughter.

11:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Summer Send Off.
This is the time to say goodbye to your daughter.  Encourage her to get involved in campus activities and become an active member of the Hollins community.

Please plan to return for Family Weekend October 31 - November 2, 2008!
