Check-In. Moody Student Center.
This one-stop check-in will include opportunities to take care of important business with many campus offices. You will also have your photo taken for your student ID at this time, and residential students will receive their room keys. As soon as you have checked in, move-in can begin!

Move-In: Time to Unpack. West Hall. “Movers and Shakers” will be on hand to help new residential students move in. Information Technology Services staff will be in residence halls beginning at 11 a.m. to assist with computer set-up. Housing information, water, tools, and supplies will be available in the West lobby.

Vendors’ Fair. Back Quad (rain location: Rathskellar, Moody Student Center).
Representatives from local businesses including shops, banks, hotels, restaurants, and cell phone companies will be on hand with their products and services.

While residential students are moving into their rooms on campus, commuter students and their families are invited to this reception where they can get to know one another.

ABC’s of Financial Aid and Paying for Your Hollins Education. duPont Chapel.
Representatives from the Business Office, the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance, and the Career Center will be on hand to answer any questions students and parents have about paying for a Hollins education.

Student Success Leader (SSL) Match-Up. Goodwin Private Dining Room, Moody Student Center.
Transfer students will meet their SSLs for the first time and will receive a copy of the 2008-09 catalog. SSLs are upper-class Hollins women who will help you with your transition into Hollins.

Looking Ahead: The Road to Commencement. Front Quad (rain location: duPont Chapel). New students officially begin their journey at Hollins with family and friends looking on. President Nancy Oliver Gray, SGA President, and Dr. Patricia Hammer, associate professor of mathematics and co-director of the first-year experience, will speak at this welcoming ceremony.

Meet Your Advisor. Advisors’ Offices.
Meet your advisor, who will also be your first-year seminar professor. At this time you will be introduced to basic information about the academic program.

During this time, your SSL will escort you to these 30 minute rotating sessions:
Academic Fair. Ballator Gallery and Camp Younts, Moody Student Center.
Faculty representatives from all departments, including education and pre-law, will be available in Ballator to answer questions about classes and academic interests. Students interested in pre-health professions (pre-med, pre-vet, etc.) are required to stop by Camp Younts during this time.
Diversity Monologue Troupe. Niederer Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.
University life requires a blending of backgrounds, personalities, and lifestyles. Recognizing and honoring individual differences enhances student life.
Honor Code. Botetourt Reading Room.
All students must sign the honor pledge. During this session, you will gain a strong understanding and knowledge of the rich and important tradition of the Hollins Honor Code.

Navigating Your Academic Path. First-year Seminar Classrooms.
During this session, you will learn the nuts and bolts of the academic program at Hollins. Find out how your transfer credits count and how to fulfill the Education through Skills and Perspectives general education program. In addition, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about short term, major requirements, and anything else related to the academic program.

This is the time for you to say goodbye to your family. You are all encouraged to get involved in campus activities and become an active member of the Hollins community.

Get a taste for how weekly student Senate meetings are conducted. Being an active member of student government is imperative for community success.

Come out and support the Hollins Soccer team in their match against Salem College. While you are there, come take part in the Hollins Games - a fun, friendly way to get involved and continue getting to know your classmates.

Adventure Day. Buses depart from in front of the Moody Student Center.
All new students, along with several Hollins faculty and staff, will board buses (bus number and departure time noted on back of nametag) bound for North American River Runners in West Virginia for a day of whitewater rafting; lunch and dinner provided. The trip is mandatory for first-year and transfer students, but the rafting is not. Participants (over 18 years of age) will be signing waivers on the bus, if they have not done so already.

Registration.
Your first-year seminar professor (advisor) and your SSL will be available to assist you with registration in one of the following locations:
- Your advisor’s office.
- Computer Lab: Dana 111. Someone will be on-hand to provide assistance.
- Your residence hall room. SSLs and RAs will be available to help.
- Tinker and Randolph study spaces. SSLs and RAs will be available to help.
- Registrar’s Office: Lower level of Main.
- Any other networked computer on campus (Library, Pleasants, etc).

Students will volunteer in the Roanoke community. Everyone is encouraged to continue serving with an agency throughout the academic year. Lunch will be provided.

Student Assistant Program Orientation. Location TBA.
All new students who have been assigned a student assistant position for the year must attend this orientation, which will include workshops to familiarize yourself with the program and its expectations and help you balance academics and work. Your supervisor will also meet with you and provide a brief training in the office or department.

At this special ceremony, new students will be welcomed, seniors will process in their robes for the first time, and President Gray will officially open the academic year.

First Step. Front Quad.
Immediately after Opening Convocation, seniors take their first official steps onto Front Quad, an area protected by tradition. Tradition maintains that seniors are the only students permitted to walk on Front Quad. Come support the senior class as they take their “first steps” on the quad and experience one of Hollins’ many traditions first hand.
