Orientation Schedule: Spring 2008

This is a tentative schedule. New students will receive the final version when they arrive on campus.
Sunday, February 3, 2008

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Residential Check-In. Moody Student Center.
Each new residential student needs to stop by and get the keys to her residence hall, meet the Housing and Residence Life staff and prepare to move in.

Monday, February 4, 2008

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Check-In.  Ballator Gallery, Moody Student Center
This one-stop check-in will include opportunities to take care of important business with representatives from many campus offices, including the Business Office, Housing & Residence Life, Abroad Programs, Chaplain’s Office, Intercultural Programs, Health & Counseling Services, Scholarships & Financial Assistance and others.  Be sure to know your license plate number if you’ll be needing a parking sticker ($25 for full-time students;  $15 for part-time students taking less than 9 credit hours) – we will take you over to Campus Safety to have your IDs made and purchase your parking passes.

10:00 a.m - 11:30 a.m.

Introduction Sessions.  Moody Student Center
Each new student population will have a chance to meet and get to know fellow students, mentors or Student Success Leaders and a staff liaison member at this time:

Horizon Students will meet with their mentors and Horizon program director, Celia McCormick, in the Janney Lounge.

Traditional First-Year Students will meet with their Student Success Leaders and Jeri Suarez in Mary Rowland.

Transfer Students will meet with their Student Success Leaders and transfer advisor, Patty O’Toole, in the Goodwin PDR.

10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Academic Overview.  Ballator Gallery, Moody
The dean of academic services, Alison Ridley, will present an academic overview during which all new students will learn about general education requirements, major and minor requirements, Short Term and other important guidelines.  Even if you are a transfer student, you will need to attend this session to find out about Hollins’ unique requirements.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Lunch and Bookstore.  Moody
Everyone is encouraged to gather together for lunch at this time.  Lunch will be provided for students; however, if you have any guests with you they will be charged $5.50 per person.  Please also take the time to visit our bookstore during this time to purchase any books/materials needed.

1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Prepare Class Schedules.  Ballator Gallery, Moody
New students will work with their mentors or Student Success Leaders on creating a tentative schedule of classes.  Snacks will be provided during this session.

2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Advising/Registration.  Ballator Gallery, Moody
With your tentative class schedule in hand, stop at your advisor’s table and he or she will assist in finalizing your spring schedule.  You will also be registering for your classes at this time.  After registering, you’ll be able to go on a guided Campus Tour with a current Hollins student.


3:00 p.m. - 4:00/4:30 p.m. Library & Computer Services Sessions
Two concurrent sessions will be conducted at this time.  The library staff will help students get acquainted with some of the resources available. Computer services staff will conduct a workshop on how to navigate e-mail and the Hollins network.

Horizon Students:  Library from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m.  Pleasants 204 from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Traditional/Transfer Students:  Pleasants 204 from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m.  Library from 3:30 – 4:00 p.m.

4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Welcome Reception.  Green Drawing Room, Main Building
All new students are invited and encouraged to meet members of the President’s Cabinet, faculty and Student Affairs staff.  Please stop by as we’d love to hear how your day went.
