International Student Orientation Program (ISOP):
Fall 2009

If you are a new international student that is coming from abroad and have not studied in the United States, you are expected to participate in the International Student Orientation Program (ISOP) that will be held on August 24-26, 2009. Please make your travel plans so you will arrive in Roanoke on Saturday, August 22nd. You will be staying with a host family for the weekend and they will be bring you to campus on Monday, August 24th.

This program is designed for students that are new to North America. We will discuss cultural stereotypes and differences to help prepare you for living and studying in the States as well as the logistics and services available at Hollins.

A tentative schedule is listed below. You will receive an updated schedule upon arrival on campus. We're looking forward to seeing you in the fall! New students will receive the final version when they arrive on campus.

10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Check-In. Gordh Room, duPont Chapel
Welcome to Hollins! The Associate Dean and peer mentors will be there to greet you upon arrival. You will get your keys to your residence hall room and be escorted to your residence hall by the student leaders.
12:00 p.m. Lunch with peer mentors. Moody Dining Hall, Moody Center. (Please wear your nametags).
1:00 p.m. Campus Tour – Part I. Moody Center
Peer Mentors will begin a guided tour of campus. Please meet in the Moody Center Lobby.
2:00 p.m. “Welcome to Hollins and Cultural & Community Engagement.” Gordh Room, duPont Chapel.
Welcome and overview of the International Student Orientation Program (ISOP), the programs offered by CCE, an opening discussion of cross-cultural issues with Jeri Suarez, Associate Dean of Cultural & Community Engagement and peer mentors.
4:00 p.m. 

Campus Tour – Part II. Gordh Room, duPont Chapel.
Peer Mentors will complete the campus tour.

5:00 p.m. Dinner with Dean Patty O’Toole and peer mentors. Moody Dining Hall.

6:30 p.m. Informal social with peer mentors and other students. Gordh Room, duPont Chapel.

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

8:15 a.m. Breakfast with peer mentors. Moody Dining Hall, Moody Center. (Please wear your nametags).
9:00 a.m. Team building activity with Associate Dean & peer mentors. Gordh Room, duPont Chapel.

10:00 a.m. Post Office. Botetourt Hall.
Peer mentors will take you to the Post Office to get your key. If you have pre-paid for the post box, you will be given your key (send a money order or check in the amount of $45 ($44 for the box and $1 for the key) to: USPS Hollins University Branch, Roanoke, VA 24020 by August 1st. Be sure to write your complete name in English). If you have not paid for your post office box, please bring $45 in cash, check, or credit card with you to breakfast.


11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Check-In. Janney Lounge, Moody Center.
This one-stop check in will include opportunities to take care of important business with many campus offices. You will also have your photo taken for your student ID and receive your student handbook.

12:00 p.m. Lunch with peer mentors. Moody Dining Hall. (Visit the bookstore afterwards).

1:30 p.m. Immigration Issues with Kirsten McKinney, Director of International Programs, Turner Hall. (Please bring your passport, 1-20, and I-94 forms with you.)

2:30 p.m. Tour of Health Center with Kim Wilson, Director of Health & Counseling Services, Turner Hall, Lower Level.
3:15 p.m. Introduction to the Batten Leadership Institute with Dr. Abrina Schnurman-Crook, Director, Bradley Hall.
4:00 p.m. Team building activity with peer mentors.
5:00 p.m. Dinner with peer mentors, Moody Dining Hall.
6:15 p.m. “Bowling” A night of bowling in Roanoke with peer mentors, participants in the ETP and Jeri Suarez.

9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Introduction to Academics at Hollins with Dr. Patricia Hammer, Dean of Academic Services, Green Drawing Room, Main Building.

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Overview of Student Assistant Program and Financial Aid, Scholarships & Financial Assistance, Green Drawing Room, Main Building (Individual student appointments will be made at this time to meet with one of the officers within the week.)

10:45 a.m.

Introduction to the Center for Learning Excellence with Phyllis Mellinger, Director of the Quantitative Reasoning Center and Brent Stevens, Director of the Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum. Middle East Building.

11:15 - 11:45 a.m. Greetings by President Nancy Gray. Gordh Room, duPont Chapel.
12:15 p.m. Lunch with peer mentors. Moody Dining Hall.
1:30 p.m. Introduction to Computer Services with Ellen Witt, Director of Instructional Technology and John Hudson, Computer Services Support Analyst. Pleasants 204.
2:15 p.m. Overview from the Business Office with Ellen White, Accounts Receivable Coordinator, regarding billing and payments, Cocke Building Conference Room, Third Floor.
3:00 p.m. Informal social gathering with peer mentors and residents of Carvin. Carvin Global Village. Jeri will join you after 3:30 p.m. for a wrap up session and informal discussion.
5:00 p.m.

Dinner with peer mentors, Moody Dining Hall.

6:00 p.m.

Mall/Stores. Roanoke.

11:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m. Vendors’ Fair. Rathskellar, Moody Student Center.Representatives from local businesses including shops, banks, hotels, restaurants, and cell phone companies will be on hand with their products and services.
