Academic Information: Horizon Students
Welcome to Hollins University!  As new Horizon students, you will be bringing a variety of different educational experiences to Hollins. Some of you will transfer in as sophomores or juniors, while others will be taking college classes for the first time. The purpose of this page and its links is to help familiarize you with how academics work at Hollins and the tasks that you will need to complete before arriving for orientation on Thursday, August 28.

To the right, you will find a link entitled Academic Overview that will introduce you to the main educational requirements including the number of credits needed to graduate, the Education through Skills and Perspectives (ESP) general education program, Short Term, and how Hollins applies transfer credits.

Those of you who are taking college courses for the first time, or who have been out of formal education for a number of years, are encouraged to enroll in a special seminar designed for you entitled “Women and Technology.” This course is restricted to Horizon students and will focus on developing certain skill areas that will help you succeed academically. The instructor of the class, Professor Nancy Healy, will serve as the students’ academic advisor. Here is a description of the course:

"Women and Technology:  Love it or hate it, we all end up using technology.  It's not just for boys, either.  For as long as we have records, women have used technology. This course will allow us to explore the role of technology in the lives of women.  We will also be using computer technology to expand our powers as students."

The course fulfills both the Information Technology “i” and the Applied Research Technique “r” skills of our Education through Skills and Perspectives general education program. If you are interested in registering for this course, which will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30-12:00 in the fall, please contact Celia McCormick, director of the Horizon program, at cmccormick@hollins.edu or Alison Ridley, dean of academic services, at aridley@hollins.edu,

New Horizon students who do not want to take the special seminar will be assigned advisors according to their academic interests. Please be sure to fill out the Advising Questionnaire so that we can work on assigning you an academic advisor as soon as possible.

In addition to filling out an Advising Questionnaire, you will be asked to do a number of other tasks over the summer including taking a series of placement tests online and preparing a tentative schedule for the fall term. Please click on the Summer Academic Checklist (for transfer/Horizon students) link to the right for more instructions on how to prepare for the fall term.

The Hollins faculty is looking forward to meeting you in August!
