Welcome to Hollins University! As you embark on your education as a student of a liberal arts institution, you will be asked to open your mind to the diverse disciplines that comprise our curriculum. Even if you think you already know what your major will be at Hollins, you will be challenged to consider how disciplines other than your proposed area of specialization will enhance both your overall learning experience and your prospects after graduation. A student of the liberal arts is able to make connections between different disciplines, ideas, and ways of thinking. You will be expected to reach beyond your comfort zone to take classes in fields you have never experienced before. This ability to explore and make connections is the mark of an inquisitive and well-rounded mind.
Your decision to attend a university like Hollins demonstrates that you already have a passion for learning and a desire to think critically and creatively about the world around you. In your first term, you will be asked to take one of 16 first-year seminars that have been specifically designed to help you hone skills you already have and develop new ones that will allow you to excel academically. After reading this introductory page, please proceed to the link titled First-year Seminars for course descriptions and access to the Advising Questionnaire through which you will select your seminar.
To the right, you will also find a link titled Academic Overview that will introduce you to the main educational requirements at Hollins including the number of credits needed to graduate, the Education through Skills and Perspectives (ESP) general education program, Short Term, and how Hollins applies Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and International Baccalaureate credits.
In addition to selecting your first-year seminar, you will be asked to do a number of other tasks over the summer including taking a series of placement tests online, completing a summer reading, and preparing a tentative schedule for the fall term. Please click on the Summer Academic Checklist link to the right for more instructions on how to prepare for the fall term.
