Academic Information
The Hollins faculty is looking forward to meeting you soon. Through this page and its links, you will find information about selecting your courses, placement tests, academic advising, and the Student Success Leader program. PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION BELOW CAREFULLY.

During orientation, you will meet with your academic advisor, a member of the Hollins faculty or administration, to discuss your interests and to register for spring term classes. Between now and then, please take some time to become familiar with both the Schedule of Classes and the online Academic Catalog (see links to the right). The catalog contains detailed course descriptions as well as the academic requirements at Hollins. As you look at the schedule of classes, please note that starred (*) courses are open to first-year students. Many such courses also fulfill general education requirements. A typical course load is four 4-credit courses per semester, plus a sport or physical education activity. In preparation for your first meeting with your advisor, please put together a list of between six and eight courses from which you would like to choose your final schedule.

If you are planning on enrolling in a Math, Chemistry, or language course in the spring, please contact the following representatives to arrange to take a placement test (or to discuss transfer credit from a previous institution): Math -- Professor Hammer (phammer@hollins.edu); Chemistry -- Professor Boatman (sboatman@hollins.edu); German -- Professor Phillips (kphillips@hollins.edu); French -- Professor Fallon (jfallon@hollins.edu); Spanish -- Professor Stanco (estanco@hollins.edu); Latin -- Professor Salowey (csalowey@hollins.edu). You may also take placement tests online over the summer if you do not plan on enrolling in one of these disciplines in your first term at Hollins.

Every new non-Horizon Hollins student must take the Quantitative Reasoning assessment during orientation. Under the Quantitative Reasoning link to the right, you will find a study packet that we strongly encourage you to review carefully. Generally, students who have done a thorough review of the packet do well on the assessment. The link to the right will explain in detail the quantitative reasoning requirements at Hollins.

Horizon students are welcome to take the quantitative reasoning assessment during spring orientation, but may want to wait until fall orientation instead. We will offer a workshop at the end of the summer to help Horizon students prepare for the assessment. If you are a Horizon student and have questions about whether or not to take the assessment in the spring, please contact the director of the Horizon program, Celia McCormick (cmccormick@hollins.edu), or the dean of academic services, Alison Ridley (aridley@hollins.edu).

The Academic Advising link will provide you with information about the role of your advisor, building your first schedule, and frequently asked questions related to academics and academic advising at Hollins.

Please use the Academic Calendar to become familiar with important dates related to academics (drop/add, registration, etc.) and for making travel plans during breaks.

Each new student will be assigned a Student Success Leader (SSL) who acts as a peer mentor throughout the first year at Hollins. Please click on the SSL link to find out more about this important program.

The faculty is delighted that you will be joining our community. Please do not hesitate to contact Trish Hammer (phammer@hollins.edu, 540/362-6333), dean of academic services, if you have any questions related to academics, advising, or the Student Success Leader program.
