Hollins Establishes Gift Funds in Memory of Shalynda Toney, Memorial Service Held

Shalynda ToneyHollins University has set up two funds in memory of Shalynda Toney '10, who died Sunday, October 11, 2009, as the result of injuries suffered when she was struck by a motorcyclist the prior Thursday in Rome, Italy. She was 21.

Shalynda, who was studying abroad this semester in Rome through Arcadia University, was struck by a motorcyclist the prior Thursday and rushed to San Camillo Hospital, where she was subsequently declared brain dead as a result of the numerous severe injuries she received. The physicians who cared for her have assured us that she did not suffer. With the blessing of her parents, and in keeping with her generous, compassionate spirit, Shalynda's organs were donated to save others.

  • An emergency fund has been created to help the Toney family with legal expenses and other related costs (gifts to this fund are not tax-deductible).
  • A memorial scholarship fund (gifts to this fund are tax-deductible).

  • Mail checks to Hollins University, P.O. Box 9629, Roanoke, VA 24020-1629. Make checks payable to Hollins University. Please write “Shalynda Toney – Emergency Fund” or “Shalynda Toney – Scholarship Fund” in the memo line.
