Power in Partnership
The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, housed in the new Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center, is a Museum Partner with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). This designation will help bring distinguished exhibitions and other arts programming to the campus. Jeffrey Allison, Paul Mellon Collection Educator for Statewide Programs at the VMFA, said, "It's remarkable to have a high-quality facility on a college campus that will offer the same attributes as any major art museum in the country."
History of Quality
The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum opened in the fall of 2004 and expands upon the tradition of high-quality exhibitions and programs that began in the basement of the Art Annex in 1948 when the original Hollins College Art Gallery was founded. The gallery was responsible for bringing quality exhibits and prominent artists to Hollins for more than five decades.
Three Interconnected Galleries
The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum features three interconnected galleries of different sizes arranged as separate rooms with a common entry for security and flexibility. The state of the art climate-controlled galleries and storage areas provide the necessary facilities for the exhibition and maintenance of a permanent collection, realizing a dream of the donor, Eleanor D. "Siddy" Wilson '30. An actress and working artist, Miss Wilson believed that Hollins needed an art museum where students and the public could view and study works of art and where a permanent Hollins collection would grow and flourish.
