J. Joshua Wheeler M.A.L.S. ’89: “Free speech for everyone”

Last summer, J. Joshua Wheeler M.A.L.S. ’89 was named director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression in Charlottesville, Virginia. Wheeler is a lecturer at the University of Virginia School of Law, from which he graduated in 1992. He had been the associate director of the Thomas Jefferson Center before being named director. “Unfortunately, some people view free speech as ‘free for me, but not for thee,’” he said. “But if you don’t have free speech for everyone, you don’t have free speech for anyone.” Wheeler is the son of the late John P. “Jake” Wheeler, who taught political science at Hollins for many years, and the husband of Susan Downie Wheeler ’84, M.A.L.S. ’91.
