Eight Steps to Applying for Financial Aid

At Hollins University, we’re dedicated to making graduate education a reality for a diverse and well-qualified group of students. We have developed a strong financial assistance program, combining merit and need-based scholarships, grants, loans, campus jobs, and special financing plans.

The following are eight steps to help make applying for financial assistance easier and more understandable.

Before You Begin. . .

We strongly encourage all applicants to make a personal, confidential appointment with Hollins’ Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance prior to starting the process. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff can provide you with the latest information on available financial assistance, useful tips on completing forms and meeting deadlines, and answers to any questions you may have. Based on your personal circumstances, we can give you a general idea of how much financial assistance you can expect and whether the aid will come in the form of loans, grants or scholarships.

Step 1

Complete your federal tax return

  • Some of the exact same questions asked on your tax return will be asked again when you complete Step 2.

Step 2

Complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

  • Send FAFSA by mail or online to the Department of Education.
  • We strongly recommend that you make an appointment with our office approximately 2-3 weeks after you complete your FAFSA.

Step 3

Complete the Hollins University graduate financial aid application

  • Be sure to make a copy for your records.

Step 4

Complete the Tuition Assistant Grant (TAG) application
The TAG application should be completed only if you are a Virginia resident and you anticipate being a full-time student for any part of the upcoming academic year.

  • All TAG applications should be completed and mailed to the address noted by July 31.
  • Include a photocopy of your Virginia state tax return.

Step 5

Send to Hollins the following:

  • Photocopies of your state and federal income tax returns
  • Hollins University Graduate Financial Aid Application (original copy)
  • A photocopy of your completed FAFSA
  • A photocopy of your TAG application (Virginia residents only)

Step 6

Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.A.L.S.) students:

  • Complete the scholarship application and mail it to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance by August 1

Step 7

You are notified of your award amount

  • Please sign and return the award form and/or make an appointment with our office if you have any questions or concerns

Step 8

Complete your loan paperwork and/or refund request forms (if necessary)

Remember. . .

You must be registered for classes at Hollins before you can receive any financial assistance award letter.
