Screenwriting & Film Studies
Summer program in screenwriting & film studies M.A. and M.F.A. in Screenwriting & Film Studies

A summer program offering the M.A. and M.F.A.
June 16 - July 25, 2008

About the program
You will become part of a supportive community of screenwriters, filmmakers, and scholars who share a love of the art of film. Class sizes are small and you will enjoy regular interaction with a distinguished faculty from Hollins and institutions across the country.
Aside from classes, you will benefit from an exciting series of visiting screenwriters, filmmakers, and film scholars during each summer term, in addition to a regular series of film screenings and discussions. You will live on Hollins' historic and beautiful campus, minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail. Although the setting is decidedly pastoral, you are also minutes from the small city of Roanoke (230,000 in the metro area), offering many cultural amenities.

New M.F.A. degree now offered
Hollins also offers a master of fine arts (M.F.A.) degree in screenwriting. The university will continue to offer the master of arts (M.A.) degree, which is designed for students whose primary interest is the academic study of film. Students in the M.A. program who wish to change to the M.F.A. may apply to do so in conjunction with their screenwriting professors’ recommendations.
Students currently enrolled in the Master of Arts in Screenwriting and Film Studies and graduates of the program are eligible to apply to the M.F.A. within its first three years. Five courses from the M.A. may be applied to the M.F.A., and students who have graduated will need to complete another thesis.

Graduation requirements
Both degrees require the completion of ten courses (40 credits) over the course of five summers on campus, or in as few as three summers in combination with off-site independent study. Courses will include film analysis and research, creative writing, narrative theory and practice, and video production. The M.F.A. program will share courses with the M.A. program, with the exception of the advanced screenwriting tutorials, which will be available only to M.F.A. students. For the M.F.A., the requirement is 40 hours plus a thesis (screenplay), whereas the M.A. requirement is 40 hours including a thesis.
