Screenwriting & Film Studies

Klaus Phillips, 1947 - 2011

Klaus PhillipsFor nearly 30 years, Professor of Film Klaus Phillips shared his passion for and vast knowledge of film with countless undergraduate and graduate students. Born in Munich, Germany, he came to Hollins in 1984 and went on to establish himself as an internationally recognized film scholar. He authored many essays, reviews, and translations, and was the editor of New German Filmmakers: From Oberhausen Through the 1970s, and co-author of Straight Through the Heart: Doris Dörrie – German Filmmaker and Author. For years, he organized the annual Hollins Colloquium on German Film, an international forum that attracted important German filmmakers who lectured, conducted workshops, and attended screenings.

One of Klaus’s lasting achievements stems from his role as founding director of Hollins’ graduate programs in screenwriting and film studies. Thanks to his tireless dedication and enthusiasm, the summer master’s programs year in and year out feature noted scholars, filmmakers, and screenwriters from around the world, and have deservedly earned a reputation for excellence. Klaus equally loved teaching and learning, and he fervently devoted his life to both pursuits.

While we mourn his passing, we take great comfort in knowing his remarkable spirit will always be a part of our campus community.
