Marx Family Fund Supports Faculty Salaries

When Edgar Marx got ready to make a gift to The Hollins Campaign for Women Who Are Going Places, he recalled how impressed he and his wife, Margot, had been by the individual attention his daughter, Katharine Marx '94, received from faculty and others at Hollins. He directed that their gift be used to establish an endowment fund to help support compensation for the teaching faculty.

Faculty Development

Fostering the Finest Teaching and Research

faculty developmentThe soul of any academic institution is its faculty. Hollins is proud of its distinguished professors, who are recognized not only for excellence in teaching, but also for their commitment to building a vibrant educational community.

            • More than 90 percent of Hollins faculty hold the highest degree in their fields;
            • the student/teacher ratio is 9 to 1;
            • faculty are cited regularly for the enthusiasm of their instruction,
            • their accessibility,
            • and the originality of their research and writing.

Students praise the faculty for making material come alive, and many students consider professors to be mentors and friends.

In short, our faculty play a transformational role in the lives of Hollins students.

endowed chairs and professorships

To ensure that Hollins continues to offer strong academic programs, we must honor our distinguished teacher/scholars' commitment.

endowed professorshipsOn average, faculty salaries at Hollins are 87 percent of those paid to faculty at such schools as Agnes Scott, Centre, Kenyon, and Mount Holyoke. Besides competitive salaries, our faculty need support for research and curriculum development to keep programs effective and relevant.

Endowed academic chairs and professorships with associated research stipends are important tools for recognizing and rewarding outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service to the university.

  • A gift of $2 million will fully endow an academic chair, providing a competitive salary and benefits package as well as support for the chairholder's scholarly research, travel, and professional development.
  • Other gift opportunities in support of faculty range from $25,000 for an endowed faculty compensation fund to $1 million for an endowed professorship.

faculty Development and research funds

faculty researchExcellent teachers model lifelong learning by maintaining active scholarly interests and pursuing creative work. As professors publish their work, they add to the body of knowledge and invigorate their teaching, while elevating the prestige and standing of Hollins.

In addition, by engaging students in research, faculty offer an exceptional learning opportunity. Therefore, Hollins rightly expects faculty to be active scholars. This commitment requires a substantial investment.

  • Endowed research funds can be designated to support a specific discipline or scholarly research in general.
  • Ongoing investment in superb teaching is also essential.
  • Funds are needed to enable faculty to revise and create courses, acquire equipment and technology for study, and gain ongoing education and enrichment.

A gift of $200,000 will create and name an endowed research program benefiting senior- and junior-level faculty and student assistants.

A gift of $50,000 will endow an individual faculty development fund, which can be designated for a specific discipline or general area, such as science, social science, or humanities.

We will be happy to help you plan your gift to Hollins. Please contact the external relations office for more information.
