The department objective is to work with all persons to preserve life, maintain human rights, protect property, and promote individual responsibility and community commitment. We believe it is our primary goal to maintain a safe and secure environment, and to provide public safety service for all persons living, working and visiting within the university.

The men and women of Campus Safety serve both the Mission of the University, and the Mission of the Department. Our department motto, to protect, serve, and educate, shows a firm commitment to the university and to the people who are the university community.

Location and duties
The Office of Campus Safety, located in Botetourt Hall, provides 24-hour-a-day security, dispatch, and public safety services to the campus community. Officers are linked to the Dispatch Center and each other by two-way radios. The officers conduct foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of the campus grounds, academic and administrative buildings, and residence halls with increased emphasis during the hours of darkness. Campus Security officers also provide additional duties such as personal safety escorts on campus, enforcing all parking regulations, registering student bicycles, and assisting with special events.

How to contact Campus Safety
The Department of Campus Safety has a Dispatch Center located within the main lobby of the Campus Safety Office located in Botetourt Hall. The dispatch center is staffed and operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year. The on campus emergency number, 6911, directly connects any campus phone with the Department of Campus Safety and should be used when fire, police, or medical response is required or there is a threat to community safety. This number is also published in the university telephone directory and student handbook. For information, escort services, and other non-emergency calls, students and employees should dial the 24-hour non-emergency number, 362-6419.

Emergency call boxes 
Hollins has 12 emergency phones located at various strategic points around the campus community, ten of which can be identified by a blue light atop metal or wooden poles. Blue lights are lit and visible at night. By pressing the red button, the caller opens a direct telephone line to the Campus Safety Dispatch Center. The dispatcher will see a display showing the location of the caller. The caller can talk directly to the dispatcher and the line will remain open until the dispatcher ends the call. The emergency phone at the front of the Dana Building is a red phone to signify that it is an emergency phone. The university campus is well lit with lighting in parking lots, on building entrances, and along walkways on campus.

Residence hall security
All exterior doors to the student residence halls are locked 24 hours a day (except the front door of Main, East & West residence halls). Students are responsible for locking their own individual rooms. Male guests in residence halls must be escorted at all times by the student they are visiting. Student rooms in newer residence halls have deadbolts, but some older residence hall rooms have conventional door locks. A two-key system is required for entry into a student’s residence -- first, the exterior door, and second, the door to the student’s room. In coordination with the Student Affairs Office, campus safety and the residence life staff conducts training in fire safety and personal security in the residence halls and at other locations on campus.

Building Security and Maintenance
The physical plant department maintains university buildings and grounds with concerns for safety and security. Campus Safety officers inspect facilities on every duty tour, write repair orders, and follow up to ensure prompt repairs. Repairs affecting personal or residence hall security are made the same day. While administrative buiildings are secured after normal business hours, some academic buildings are open 24/7 for student access. Safety officers, to ensure the safety of the community, patrol all 24/7 buildings. Some university facilities are equipped with video camera surveillance systems. The Hollins University Apartments are camera equipped and monitored 24/7 at the Campus Safety Dispatch center.
