Visitation
General Guidelines
- All guests must be escorted at all times.
- Students are responsible for informing their guests of university policies and are held accountable for the behavior of their guests while they are at Hollins.
- Students must pay for their guests' meals in the dining room. Students may pay in cash or use Hollins Dollars on their student ID card.
- The university discourages entertaining guests during reading days and exam periods.
- Unescorted guests should never be admitted into the residence halls under any circumstances.
- Guest vehicles must be registered with Campus Safety for each visit.
- Guest parking is available in the East lot, West lot and at the Apartments.
- It is the responsibility of the Hollins community to keep the community safe.
- Unescorted guests will be approached and asked who they are visiting. Housing and Residence Life staff, Campus Safety officers, or students will escort the visitor to the Moody Student Center to wait for his/her hostess.
- Guests without escorts are welcome in the Moody Center, where they may socialize with other university visitors, students, faculty and staff. Hollins staff or a Campus Safety officer will approach them if their behavior becomes inappropriate or there is a complaint about them by a member of the Hollins community.
- Unescorted visitors from campus parties will be stopped from wandering on the main campus, and as long as they are civil and cooperative may be escorted back to the Moody Student Center to wait for his/her hostess. Unescorted guests whose behavior toward any member of the Hollins community is uncivil or uncooperative will be immediately removed from the campus.
Guests
Rules concerning guests at Hollins exist for the protection of the residence hall community. A guest is defined as:
- Any person who is present at the invitation of a student; or,
- Any person who is received by a student; or,
- Any invited or uninvited nonstudent who is accompanied by a student.
Overnight Guests
For overnight guests staying in a residence hall, lightweight folding cots are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Buildings Office in Botetourt Hall. Cots may be requested by submitting a “service request” at least 48 hours prior to guest arrival. Please advise your guest to bring their own linens and/or sleeping bag. A guest may stay overnight up to three days out of any week according to the designated option and roommate contract. Any stay over that amount of time needs to be approved and registered by the director of housing and residence life.
First-year residents may have overnight guests up to three weekends (Friday noon to Monday 8:00 a.m.) during the fall term, and follow the upper-class visitation policy during the spring term. If the area supervisor, in collaboration with the director of housing and residence life, deems necessary, the entire first-year class may have their upper-class guest privileges revoked for the spring term. Upper-class students may have overnight guests visit at any time of the week, not exceeding three consecutive nights per week. After three consecutive nights, there is to be a seven day period without overnight guests.
Male Guest Housing
For the convenience of our female undergraduate students who do not want their male guests to stay in the residence halls, the Alumnae Cottage will be available for male guest housing on the weekends (Friday and Saturday) free of charge. Guidelines for use:
- Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Each room will contain two twin beds.
- Reservations must be made by the hostess at least 48 hours before the guest’s visit. Reservations can be made through the assistant to the dean of students at x6588 during regular work hours (M-F: 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m.).
- Hostesses are required to sign a contract on behalf of their guests. By signing the contract, they accept responsibility for their male guests’ behavior. Hostesses are responsible for communicating university rules, regulations, and policies to their male guests. Violations of university policies will be handled through the judicial system. Repeated violations may result in the reevaluation of having a separate space for male guest housing.
- Each hostess will be permitted no more than two guests during one weekend visit. With regard to frequency of visits, hostesses must follow the visitation policy outlined in the Student Handbook.
- All guests must be at least 18 years of age.
- Keys can be picked up at Campus Safety, at which time the guest’s vehicle must also be registered.
- No alcoholic beverages may be kept or consumed in the Alumnae Cottage at any time (even if the guest or the hostess is of legal drinking age).
- Hostesses may not stay in the Alumnae Cottage with their guests.
- A Residence Life professional staff member will check on the guests periodically to make sure that guidelines are being followed. The staff member will also do a room check after the guests’ departure.
- Hostesses will be charged a $25 fine for rooms that are not left in the condition in which they were found. In addition, they will be charged for the cost of any damages to the room and/or lost keys.
- Linens and pillows must be provided by the hostess or the guest.
- Hollins is not responsible for personal items left in the room.
- Guests must check out and return their keys through Campus Safety by noon.
Hostesses are expected to escort their guests when they are anywhere on campus other than in the Alumnae Cottage or Moody. Students who wish to have male guests stay in the residence halls as opposed to the Alumnae Cottage must follow the Guest Policy and Overnight Guests sections in the appropriate section of the Student Handbook.
